Rackable Servers....worth it?

Thread Starter
I'm looking for a dual CPU system on a budget to experiment with an ESXi lab once again.

I noticed a thread regarding Rackable 1U C1001-TY3 2 x XEON QUAD CORE L5520 Rackable System.

I like the price for the dual quad-core processors with 24 GB of ECC ram. I understand the case is a 1/2 size 1U so it will be loud. I already plan on moving the hardware into a different motherboard/case.

Does anyone have experience using any of these systems?

Thanks OCN!

Just build a PC.

If you just plan on moving it out of the 1U case, you're just wasting money.

i have to agree.

unless your a.) staying in the same house for a very long time and b.) have a dedicated cupboard or room for the cab (extra noise from discs, smaller faster fans) then you just making a rod for your own back. Sure its good epeen on a thread where you post a few rack mounted pc's but in the end a decent tower case with a choice selection of fans, sound insulation, good cooler and silent psu will be easily as good if not much better and most of the fun comes from building it and getting the balance right between cooling , noise , performance

Migrating the whole thing to a new case would be rather difficult to do, especially if you want it to not look like a hack job. Moving everything over but the motherboard is just a waste of money,

i have some 2U versions and they are great, work well for a virtualization lab and i have been playing arround with them on and off for 8 months now.. you can find some great prices on 2U versions instead of trying to migrate the hardware. 2U versions are still noisy but no ware near as noisy as a 1U supermicro i have..

look around this site as well as thier eBay store and you might find something you like

Good to hear, my progress has stagnated somewhat too.
I'll be getting CCNP for my next goal.

"Rack mount" and "inexpensive" and "high end" are three things that don't go together. You can only pick 2.

Personally, I love rack mounts, but usually just end up putting in a rack mount shelf in and putting 2 towers side by side and call it a day.

It is a pain to put consumer grade parts in a rack case.
You need a 3U or 4U

Because normal heatsinks won't fit in anything smaller.
And top mount heatsink fans aren't designed for rack cases.
