Yeah, I have a 640gb seagate baracuda now but after 4 years im pretty sure its failing. So I'm looking for the best for around $70. I do a lot of gaming and was thinking about the wd black, how would it compared to the wd blue/green?

I used to be a Western Digital fanboy but TBH, they've gotten too big and the QA has been slipping. From the HDD's I've had, the recent ones I've used have been failing in a couple years VS their old ones that last forever.

Want a good solid HDD, look into Samsung Spinpoints.

This one is faster, twice the capacity, just as quiet, and approximately the same price.

The Samsung Spinpoints that are now made by Seagate in China? (Not where they used to be made...)

Why yes, those have a solid track record. And a 1 year warranty in case they do fail. tongue.gif

I think you'll find soon enough that this applies to all manufacturers. Modern drives use more intricate technology. The platter densities that they're using are mind blowing. For a while there, drive manufacturers were also endlessly trying to cut costs.

I've had better luck so far with WD drives, but I must admit that no drives compare to the good old ones. I've seen quite a few Fujitsu drives that are nearing 2 decades of age - they're used daily in old DOS point of sale systems.

I've had pretty bad luck with the Samsung F3's, and have, only in the last week, made the jump to WD.

It's too early for me to have a real opinion on WD, but i can say from my Samsung experience that i won't be buying another F3 anytime soon. Two failed just after the warranty period. Not good at all.

I have had my 2 of 3 WD blacks for just about 4 years now running in raid, added the third one two years ago. WD Blacks are by far the most reliable hard drives you can buy period. Not only are the blacks 4 year old tech but the performance is still excellent. I have had my 2tb Hitachi dive fail a few months ago just after about a year of use. I have a seagate hard drive that has died twice in a single year, my buddy's seagate 500gb hard drive dies out about every 1.5 years. He is on his third hard drive now and no longer on warrentys what kinda sucks as it will probably die again. I have had a bunch of other seagate hard drives die as well, from older computers and people I know. Can't wait for single platter 1tb Blacks come out so I can build a new raid with those.

So really stay far away from seagate, I don't think they even make a single reliable hard drive. Most of Hitachi drives are fine but the 2tb sure have their problems. Samsung are alright for the most part, no up their with WD in terms of reliability but really only WD makes truly reliable drives. I have a friend that still runs the 2 250gb caviar drives I gave him from back in the day. Running them in raid 0 as I type this perfectly fine after 7 years of being used.

For a main drive/gaming drive I'd stay far away from "green" low powered drives. Something like the WD Black or Blue would be a good choice for a main drive. Or, if you're willing to shell out another $30, Newegg currently has the VelociRaptor 600GB for $100.
