This means Half Life 3 in the works correct? I mean, what else would they debut the engine with?

I suspect they will release source 2.0 as a massive update to the old engine if they keep compatibly witch would make sense then they can just update the files via steam and roll 2.0 out for all there games. I would not mind seeing some of DX11 features for windows and more Open GL goodness for linux. No mater what they do with the engine source will still be awesome. biggrin.gif

Considering they are aiming for Linux compatibility then in my opinion it would make more sense to just beeline straight to OpenGL as features wise these two are quite comparable and that way one would not need to have very different graphics pipelines for windows and linux releases.

Also Macs use OpenGL too.

When members of 4chan popped over to Valve's office to deliver Newell's 50th birthday present they also asked him some questions. The most pertinent was this:

“Is Valve potentially already working on a new engine? Source 2? Could or… could not be?”

Newell replied: “We've been working on Valve's new engine stuff for a while, we're probably just waiting for a game to roll it out with.”

Then, “Is it going to be more than just an extension to Source? Is it an entirely new engine?”

Newell: “Yeah!”

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2012-11-12-gabe-newell-confirms-valve-working-on-source-2

So Gabe Newell says it is an entirely new engine. What that exactly means, I am not sure.

What? If all the information regarding how Valve works is true... Newell has no power what so ever to decide which game to work on or not. Still, I can't think of any game released by Valve that wasn't spectacular so I have no problem waiting because I know that HL3 will be a hit.

finally the boss realizes that his engine is ancient.
it's about time for Valve to go back to being a AAA company and use the lastest graphical features such as those in DirectX 11.1 and OpenGL 4.3

As someone with an image of Crysis as his avatar, I wouldn't expect you to favour gameplay over graphics, however Source has been fine these past 8 years. Valve is still an AAA company.

I'd also prefer they don't use DX11.1. Not only because it's DirectX and locked to Windows, but now MS is locking it to Windows 8.

And as someone with a EA sucks avatar, I would expect you to dog anyone who likes crysis.

I love valve and HL series, but crysis has a heck of a story line, you just cant see past your hater goggles. Its called progress, love when people dog on CoD for using the same rehashed engine, but its OK for valve to do it. I understand Valve greatly improves on it vs CoD, but the point of fact still remains.

There are still a lot of issues with , or at least that i have with it. Long loading times are the worst of it. Multithreaded performance also can be a lot better, but that can sadly be said about most engines. And hopefully it will be 100% OpenGL and 0% directX.

But i'm pretty sure they'll deliver a very good engine. It's valve after all, my favorite developer since Blizzard joined with Activision.
