550 Dollar Gaming Build

Hello all, I am planning on building a new gaming system soon, and I would very much appreciate it if you could advise me on the selection of the parts I will be using. I have assembled a list of parts that I am planning on getting and would like to know if it can be improved upon. 550 dollars is the general price I am shooting for, although going over is fine, but I don't want to go over 590 dollars. I am using Newegg as my only source of parts as I want to keep my personal information as confined as I can.

Current List

CPU - AMD Athlon x4 640 - 69 dollars with code

RAM - Corsair 4 Gb - 25 dollars

PSU - Corsair 500 watt - 60 dollars

Motherboard - Asus M5A78L-M LX Plus AM3+ - 60 dollars

HDD - WD 500 Gb Blue - 70 dollars

Case - CM HAF 912 - 60 dollars

GPU - EVGA GTX 650 ti - 140 dollars

OS - Windows 7 - 85 dollars with code

Total - 587 dollars shipped

I am fine with changing any of these parts, as long as it isn't in build quality.

How do you plan on cooling your rig? stock cpu cooler? You do plan to game so your gpu will get hot but maybe not so as much for the cpu.

you could save money by skipping the disk drive ( borrowing one or using one from an old computer) and getting a cheaper case. You could load win 7 onto a flash drive and open from there. That being said you could allocate the money for a better cpu or gpu.

Looks good. I agree with the dvd drive and such its nice to have but if you can just jack one from another computer i would do that save some cash. Or if you really wanted to save some money you can always get windows "the other way" but of course that come with a certain risk. But what ever you do good luck! thumb.gif

Ehh Don't go with an Athlon anymore.... Either go with Trinity or even the new FX chips if you want to stay AMD. Try to stay away from Nvidia cards for a budget rig. they are usually priced higher than their AMD counterparts. A Sandy Bridge Pentium would actually be best for your budget...

Do you really only want to use newegg? because that will suck your budget dry. You should at least use Amazon and or NCIX as well.

And make sure you drop that $60 case, I would say, make your budget $40 max for a case, otherwise it is taking away from the rest of the build.

I will drop the dvd drive and use a flash drive to download windows; how would I go about doing this? How do I place windows on the flash drive and install windows? I have only done it regularly before. Thanks.

The reason I am considering the Athlon is because the FXs seem to not perform very well for their price, and the Trinity APUs are built with integrated graphics in mind (correct me if I am wrong here, I know the original APUs were) and seem to be lacking in processing power; I do like the prospect of getting a Pentium, but I often run games with background programs such as Skype and antivirus programs and I believe that the four cores would help me do that.

The pentium dual core will be about as fast as your 4 core Athlon, Trinity's CPU performance is slightly above Athlon level. The FX chips do not perform amazingly, but are still decent for the price and have better performance than Trinity.Background programs should not really be too much of an issue, if you really think it will be, grab a i3-2100. But the Pentium G850 is almost as good as the i3-2100 without HT. It is a very good budget chip.
