Repaste the heatsink for your laptop, make sure the correct tension is on the heatsink to the CPU and GPU. Are the fans and heatsinks separate for the CPU and GPU? My Dell has 2 heatpipes but both go to 1 heatsink and 1 fan.
A cooling pad with good fans will also help your cooling for the laptop. I see a good 5C+ drop in temps using my cooling pad on my laptop. It basically forces cold air into the blower fan easier and cools it more efficiently.
Make sure in throttle stop you check the boxes next to the core modulation, and multiplier. That I think enables the lock on it. And the TDP button can increase the time the cores will stay in boost mode if you have a boost feature on the CPU.
I can lock my 460m processor into 2.98GHz, it really helps with framerates but the 96shader unit 420m just cant provide decent gaming performance...ug

Make sure on BF3 you have at least 8GB of ram on the laptop too! My 4GB is not even close to enough memory for bf3....

People, please don't go around giving everyone the same generic advice. I have a G73 with a i5 + 460m. You can spend the time to take this laptop apart (tricky, lots of little screws, consult youtube for teardown vids) and reapply the heatsink, you will get slightly lower temps if done right.

Use a laptop cooler to push more air under the thing, it will keep temps from climbing TOO high (80+) or just use a book or something to elevate the bottom.

I know what you mean about BF3, seems like no matter what it sits at the fence between playable experience, and unplayable jitters. No ram limitation is not at fault, my desktop rig runs with 3gb of ram. I can max BF3 with good FPS at all times, might not be as high as some of you with i5/i7 but hey I got the Q6600 in grade 11.

Lastly, I want to know if you've ever owned a "portable gaming computer" before. I've used the previous generation of mobile gaming chips. They would struggle to run games from 09/2010 on any kind of setting. Simply not enough power.

Look at the 460m, sure its not the most powerful chip out there but on my laptop I have installed
Assassins Creed Revelation
Just Cause 2
GTA IV
GTA San Andreas
CS:GO
Torchlight II
Diablo III
Starcraft III
Mass Effect 2/3
Sniper Elite V2
Saints Row the Third
Left for Dead 2
Payday The heist
CoD Black Ops.
BF3 (single player runs butter smooth, just multiplayer is a clusteryouknowwhat.
BF BC2

All of the above runs smoothly, to the point where I don't bother turning on my desktop to play. I can play fine sitting in bed with the tv on. You might want to try OC with afterburner. I got mine from the stock 675 to 800 stable. Most can reach at least 800 without touching anything else. I do get a few FPS more in games, every bit helps.

What a sensationalist thread title.

EDIT: heat has always been an issue with powerful laptops, it takes a lot more than cooling pads and thermal paste, it requires knowledge of laptop cooling mods (and generic cooling knowledge) and theory and science behind it. Things such as wattage, air flow, copper shims, under voting, fan profiles, heat sink modification and more.

I had a Mobility Radeon 5870 with an i7 720QM (2.8GHz turbo) and it did surprisingly well on BF3 - almost maxed out (1600x900 resolution)
Almost ever dropped below 40 frames. Usually sitting at a happy 50-60.

Way ahead of you, First day I got this laptop, (With warranty) I took it apart to the bones, and Applied fresh AS5 paste. When I get a laptop for my use and my use only, I take very good care of it.
Asus could have done a better job with the whole design. I mean, CMON to take out a HDD or Ram Stick, you have to take Keyboard and Mouse pad off. Just to change the paste, I have to take it completely apart. You would think they would be Enthusiast Friendly.

@Sylon, I had a few laptop coolers, Then I realized I don't need to cool the plastic, I did a Few benchmarks, and Laptop coolers do nothing but cool the Plastic and Ram sticks. If they even have vents. (for me that is)
I used to own only laptops, before I understood why buy a Desktop. (Good ol Days) But after having this laptop, I actually am very surprised. How great it is, Now I know my i7 was clocked lower, and Pushing playable FPS was almost not possible. But thanks to the above posts, I was able to Turbo my i7 to 2.4ghz, and 460M to 800mhz, stable. Very pleased with it's performance now. The heat sinks were not a issue to put back on, so they should be okay. I will be looking for a way to upgrade them.

@cdoublejj I am still very interested to see how I can Mod the Fans to high enough speeds. Noise is not a issue since I use headphones anyway. Possibly find a 12V pin to solder the fans too, and make a nob on the side for regulation. We will see how it goes thumb.gif

Your pretty much on the ball that's exactly what i'm talking re pasting on day one and complaining about the design that's what it's all about I pretty much what I do at the shop. That said you should check out notebook review forums sometime they have a better equipped community. Some of the things i have seen done are using speedfan, under volting and heat sink modification (ie adding more heat sinks and copper) and air intake modification.
