Lenovo Y480? 14" screen, ~5 lbs and powerful hardware for $750. I've got one and it runs SCII all settings maxed at 900p biggrin.gif If you're not gaming on it then the battery lasts a good few hours as well.

VAIO S13 is also an option. Not quite as powerful as the Y480 but also much thinner and lighter. Can be configured with discrete graphics and 1600x900 screen for under $1000. You could fit an i7 in too well below the budget if you use the education discount.

interesting, slightly bulky and heavy for my taste but the specs are really good. Do you know if it's possible to take out the HDD and put in a SSD?

As long as it uses a SATA hard drive (it does) you can put an SSD in it. Or if it has an mSATA port you could run an SSD and the mechanical drive.

The Y480 hard drive is easily accessible, I replaced mine with an SSD myself. 2 screws and you can take off a bottom panel, 2 more screws hold the drive caddy in, and it has a right-angle SATA adapter so you lift it straight up and it comes out. It also has an mSATA slot that is accessible under that same panel.

The pictures make it look really fat, but it's really not too bad in person (although I suppose it depends what your last laptop was... tongue.gif)

currently my work gives us 13 inch mac airs so they are pretty thin/light. My previous was a HP Pavillion and it weighted about 6-7pounds with battery in. I looked at the specs page for Y480 but it didn't say whether it's around 5 pounds with battery or not. Given that I only travel about 3-4 times a year, I guess it wouldn't be that big of an issue. You use it as a mobile?
I use it to go to class with. Yeah it might seem a little hefty coming from a macbook air. I believe it's 5.1 pounds with battery.

Eurocom rep is very nice and gave me $840 for pre black friday deal on the monster 1.0, I'm trying to squeeze it to $820 and it would be sold for me.

5.1 pounds is slightly too heavy for me, mac air is not fair to compare to but yea. The 4 times I do travel are all airfares and I hated carrying my hold HP pavilion around.

Thanks for your feedbacks and suggestions, I'll let you guys know about the results.

Keep me posted on BF deals though if you find them biggrin.gif

So I went with some more internet searching and found out about alot of negative reviews with the resellers like eurocom and gostar etc. I'm second thinking myself here and might just stick to a bigger brand instead.

How many hours of Y480 would you say it lasts with just web browsing at mid low brightness?

THe sony looks pretty good but like you said, the specs are quite lower for a premium price.

I can get about 4-5 hours. Lenovo's estimate doesn't exaggerate too much. Yeah the Sony is a much slimmer machine, and you have to pay a premium for that light form factor.

Skip Eurocom, they are a Clevo Reseller and do have a bad reputation for customer service, Look at XoticPC.com they sell the same clevo bases under the sager brand name, they have excellent customer service. You're almost selling yourself short buying a Lenovo when you were looking at a Clevo to begin with. They are an excellent value for the money.
