tell me what this camera and gear are

Thread Starter
hey guys,

my cousin gave me his old SLR camera, and as i am a total newb to photography and camera gear, i was wondering if you could tell me more about it... from what i can tell the camera is a pentax SF1n and there are tree lenses of various sizes to go with it. The first lens is a Pentax 50mm (that i assume came with the camera). the second is a Sigman auto focus 28-70mm. and the last us a Takumar-f zoom 70-210mm. i then have a bunch of different filters and what i think are lenses (they look like spy glasses), a flash, a few tripods, and about half a dozen different hoods. would you please let me know what you know about this camera? is it any good? are the lenses anything special? or whatever you know about it would be great smile.gif

Thanks in advance,
-esk smile.gif

WARNING: it took 100% of my camera knowledge to even type that out, so please use lay mans terms tongue.gif

EDIT: the lense the Pentax lense and the takumar-f appear to be 49mm diameter and the sigman is a 52mm diamiter

That Sigma 28-70, if it's the f2.8 one, should be pretty good. It won't be as good as the canon L lens but it should be pretty good. You will probably end up using that one the most since the range is pretty versatile and should be more than what you need for day to day shooting. I don't know anything about that 70-210 lens so I can't help you out there but you should be pretty set with those lenses. I say just go out there and just get used to the camera and composing pictures and all that. Good luck thumb.gif

takumar is pentax. its the branding their lenses had back in the day i think. it depends on how old the sigma lens is. i dont know how far they go back but if its a super old zoom lens odds are its pretty awful as back in the day zoom lenses were not nearly as good as they are today. pretty much almost all prime lenses no matter the age are pretty darn good

good is a subjective term though. just go shoot and have fun with the gear. having good gear doesnt mean you are guaranteed good pictures. knowing the process and technique to visually pleasing images will result in pictures that you like and are proud of thumb.gif

technically speaking its easy but very time consuming and not worth the effort if your phone has a decent camera.

if both cameras are 35mm cameras then you can shoot any 35mm film you want. 35mm film is the same as 135 film if you go shopping for it just in case thumb.gif

well when you get it test it out. for the purpose of taking pictures of your computer shooting film is going to be a pain in the butt and more expensive over time than shooting film even if your film camera is free you still have to buy film not to mention the learning curve that will result in a roll or two not coming out the way you expected

shoot film for fun but i wouldnt suggest doing photos of your rig on film. its a hassle

that was my suspicion tongue.gif... ill have to see what the other camera is before i decide what to do... from my understanding there is a posibilty that the lenses are cross compatable (and im prity sure the second camera doesnt have any extra lenses)

depends on the camera. not all cameras are the same mount which means not every lens will fit on every camera
