Case fans for Define R4

Thread Starter
I just got all the parts for my HTPC build and now I just need to find quiet fans that will push a lot of air.

I'm going to be using the Define R4 .

It comes with 2 x 140mm fans (exhaust and front of case). I was thinking about moving the fan from the back of the case to the front and getting something else for exhaust.

The most important part is for this fan to be quiet.

I've been searching around and I really like this Phanteks fan, but not sure how good of a case fan this would make.

Does the R4 use the same mounting system like the Midi? If it does, the Phanteks would not fit because of their shape. Do the fans need to be white or could they be any color?

Doesn't have to be white.

I'm not sure if the mounting is the same. I know R4 support 140mm fans, is it because of their shape?

I just looked it up and the R4 has the fan clipping to attach a fan, so it is the same as a Midi. Yes, because of their shape it will not. Same goes for a TY-140. Modding it would probably allow you to mount it, but I have no idea what you would need to mod.

I actually made a topic regarding the same fan:

Thanks for letting me know, I was about to place an order.

Do you have any recommendation for something similar?

Noiseblocker PK-3/PK-2 seem to be very good from the reviews I read. Kind of pricey, but pretty quiet. The be quiet! Silent Wings 2 are also highly regarded for their low noise. Also pricey, but worth it. Only issue I see if you went with the Silent Wings 2 is that I do not think they are available in North America.

Kudos to Elohim for finding some sound tests for the PK-2 and Silent Wings 2:

http://www.hardwaremax.net/reviews/luefter/521-test-be-quiet-140-mm-luefter.html?showall=0&start=5

They really are silent and still move plenty of air.

There are two fan round-ups here on OCN you should check out:

http://www.overclock.net/t/1321074/tator-tots-big-quiet-120mm-140mm-fan-round-up

I am waiting until these guys get some more fans reviewed and say which they think is best.

Thanks for that link. I read the "Fans" thread earlier, that's how I found the Phanteks. The noiseblocker is the front runner for now. If I don't find anything better in the next couple days I will probably just get it.

Enermax would also be a good choice for silence. I don't know how true the specs are regarding their air flow, but people have said they are truly silent.

This is great. My local Fry's has the Enermax in stock.

I found Noctua has 2 different 140mm fans and I'm reading up on them right now.

- Ultra Silent
- Variable Impeller

Like the Phanteks, the Noctua will sadly not fit the front either.

I also forgot to mention, the Corsair AF140 fans also seem to be good.
