I just dont think that you need something incredibly fast for game storage. I have only seen a couple people who focus on the speed of their steam drive (like someone with 12 250gb ssds because he hates hdds). I have just a simple 2tb seagate drive that I got for 88 dollars shipped, and it is more than enough speed for my steam games.

Its read/write is 160 MBPS, which is more than enough in my opinion.

If you want to spend more for a couple seconds faster load times, go ahead, but we usually worry more about storage space than storage speed when it comes to our steam games. Linus from linus tech tips (idk if you know who that is lol) just uses an external 2.5" usb 3.0 drive for his steam games.

not pushing seagate on anyone as I know some people have legitimate reasons to dislike them

SSD cache option would be the best bet if you already have a spare HDD you can put the games on

I used to run OS/apps on a primary SSD than then a Samsung F3 1TB w/ 64GB SSD cache until I upgraded to 2 x 256GB SSD for OS/apps ans Steam. And while my Steam collection is much larger than 500GB, I just uninstall the large single player games that don't have much replay value

Alright, I think you guys are right...I honestly don't feel like spending another $100 if I don't have to. However, y'all think the WD Green 2TB will be ample for Steam games?

If you're just storing and playing the games from the drive, it'll be fine. A 7200RPM drive would give a little performance boost, but it's up to you if it's worth the difference in price.
I have my games stored on a Caviar Black, but I also record Fraps at the same time.

Only if you disable head parking and split it in two. When I had games on my Green drive, I created a smaller partition (~20% of the drive) and tossed my games on that. Pretty decent access times... right around 10ms. thumb.gif I did my best to avoid accessing the rest of the drive while gaming... I only put stuff like pictures/videos/downloads on the other 80%. No active data. Not even music, since I'd probably be listening while gaming. (So it either goes in the first partition with your other active data - your games - or it goes on a separate drive.)

If you do decide to upgrade, consider the WD10EZEX as well. It's cheaper, quieter, has higher sequential speeds - the tradeoff is access times, but that matters less when single-tasking. (If the drive is dedicated to nothing but games and runs only one game at once, high access times are less of a weakness.)

Thanks for the insight, but how do you doable "head parking" and what sizes should I partition the drive into? Considering... It's a 2TB WD Green drive and I plan on using it for Steam games/games ONLY (I.e. this is solely a gaming computer). No music, videos, etc. because my entertainment and work computer is my MacBook Pro (Win 8 and OS X ML).

Best.

Best.
If the drive is dedicated to nothing but games, you don't have to partition it in two - unless you want to manage which games get to be on the edge of the drive. (Faster access)

Disabling head parking is a little bit of work. It requires a DOS tool. Luckily people have written up instructions on how to do it...
