You are right, my post was perhaps over-generalized and flawed, but it was aimed towards the "upper end" comment of a previous poster.
I never doubted that Apple made great products. I actually had experience with macs since the early 90s (mainly second hand due to buddies and colleagues owning them).
I do have an ipod, I do pay for a iPhone user in my house, I do use iPads as a presentation tool for my work. I use all the tools I have, and I use all the tricks I can to get the job done. Yes, Apple is FOTM for quite a few months...
If it wasn't for their over-zealous patent wars etc I would have no real issue with them. IMHO, wish I was in their shoes and proven to be a better man, I doubt it is easy as some ppl make it sound in forums.
That said,
I don't use their PCs/workstations simply because for what I was doing most of my life, Macs were not supported or had limited access (games, 3DS etc), and/or were too overpriced for my student wallet.
The MacOS was always gorgeous, the devices themselves even more, but Apple has grown more by marketing itself as a cult, pushing proprietary accessories and "forcing their ways", than selling great products.
It is like the reason the Mustang is selling so good in the States...you buy into the club. It was never a great car, it was an OK car, but the hype is greater than any car @ that price could offer for that target group.
Right now, good products or not, AAPL is just like Facebook. A bubbly empire that tries to monetize their fame by selling the "you are not someone if you don't have/use me" idea.
They step on vanity more than substance and that's why ppl are so passionate about it.
But which company doesn't use marketing for that? Those "saints" in Samsung I bet they do/want to...so does Sony (another saint), Microsoft (I know I'm weird, but i've liked Gates more than Jobs since...ever?) and dragging it all the way to Porsche, BMW etc...all of them.
In many ways the whole samsung vs. apple scheme thing is just even more publicity - just free. Any publicity is good publicity.
