Yeah that's the best way. If you google "what is my ip address?" you'll also get an answer. I use whatsmyip.org about 5 times a day .

If at all possible i'd use SFTP. The best clients support it and i know NAS 4 Free supports it. FTP isn't very secure.

FTP isn't secure at all. Best options are FTPS (FTP over SSL) or SFTP (SSH File Transfer Protocol). SFTP is far simpler to set up. smile.gif

ok so after all that things changed and they got a ditto psudo-NAS

so I decided to set up a NAS4free at my house...and its working great Loving it 3 desktops a laptop and a couple of smartphones/tablets and life is good.

until...I try and FTP in from outside the LAN

this is the setup and what I've tried.

DSL Westell A90 (verizon branded thing) modem/router-->Dlink DIR-655 router-->2 wired devices (NAS4free box, and desktop) multiple wireless devices.

when I try and use an FTP client on my phone I cannot connect.

What I've dont
I've enabled "Virtual Server" on the Dlink with the Ip address of the NAS4free box and the public port set to 21 under traffic type I've set it to TCP...(I also have options for UDP, both or other, if I choose other it will not let me set the port)

also instead of using the Virtual server (which the Help file on the DLink suggested using for FTP) I've also tried setting up a port forwarding rule with TCP and UDP ports 21 open

I've also tried setting up a port forwarding rule on the DSL modem to point to the Dlink.

So what am I doing wrong here none of these things have worked

FTP can be a complete bastard with port forwarding. The issue exists because unlike HTTP which uses a single connection for everything, FTP uses a minimum of two connections: one for control and one for each file transfer. Additionally, FTP gives the other end point it's local address rather than its WAN address, which will obviously cause a routing issue.

do I need to have FTP:// or HTTP:// in front of my ip address? or can I just have my IP when I input it to my FTP client...or does it matter?

btw this is what I'm getting that link you posted talks about setting ports for data transmission I'm not seeing a place to do that here.
