Did I make a mistake ordering these new parts?

Thread Starter
I just ordered the following parts and they are shipped and due to be delivered next week.. With all the talk about AMD vs Intel, did i make a mistake by spending money on these parts?

Am I really going to see much of a difference in the real world when using this setup for email, internet browsing, photoshop, burning dvds and the odd game?

My first AMD was XP2500 Barton and current desktop is a X2 6000. Both were good choices at the time. I also have a HP laptop with a i5-2540m with a AMD firepro M5950 card which is what i use mostly, but I still feel the need for a new desktop for photos and other stuff. I hope the FX-8350 is faster than my laptop.

New parts on the way

FX-8350
Asus crosshair V formula Z
Thermaltake 2.0 extreme
Corsair 800d

Still have to order memory. any suggestions?

Will my PC power and cooling 610watt silencer power this system with a hd 7950?

Or just send all back and buy X79 or x77 platform.

I think your parts selection is just fine.

The only place I forsee any possible issues would be you going SLI.

This doesn't appear to be a part of your upgrade path ( obviously ).

I don't think you will regret the 8350 because it isn't bad, it is just intel has better offerings.

no you will not see any performance difference in everyday use..and it looks pretty good..the 800d is a wc case..not the greatest on air cooling..just to let you know..but i came from amd to intel and i will never again go back to amd..personally it would cost about the same to go intel like an i5 3570k is 169.99 at microcenter and you get 40 off a z77 motherboard..just to let you know..i do alot of gameing and some vid editing

As basic as I can put it. You are wrong. Intel has DIFFERENT offerings. They both have strengths over each other in different uses.

as far as RAM goes, I recommend a couple of these. They OC like mad.

this. intel's i5 and AMD's 8350 tend to trade blows even closer then the 8150 did. if your a gamer, the i5 might have been better, but unnoticeably so, and for things like video editing, photoshop, some boinc projects (although most likely not f@h) and general multitasking you would expect the 8350 to do better. either way, the user is unlikely to notice a difference in anything. both are great.

@snitch I can totally see this if a gamer went from phenom/bulldozer to SB. but the same doesn't really hold true for piledriver

The Crosshair and 800D are a bit extravagant considering your setup but fine parts nonetheless.

The 8350 is a decent CPU at a great price though its viability depends on the workload. For gaming at stock it's about on par with an Ivy i3. Since the i3 can't overclock yet the FX and i5 can you will end up with performance between the i3 and i5 but it's still not exactly optimal. However for multithreaded stuff in general the FX kills the i5 and more often than not even proves itself to be competitive with the i7.

I assume the Thermaltake 2.0 Extreme is a closed loop CPU cooler? Eh they have their ups and downs. Not going to comment on whether it was a good choice or not as it's kinda subjective.

I got the 800d case to put the Thermaltake 2.0 extreme liquid cooler in.
First time trying a water cooler, hope it does the job!
Might even try a bit of overclocking for fun.

Any suggestions on memory in the $100.00 range?

an i5 mobile is comparable to an i3 desktop part. You should see an improvement performance wise, depending on what you are looking to do. Photoshop is the big one where you should notice the biggest difference. Everything else is going to be negligible, and most likely would benefit more from a ssd. I hope you got one of those as well tongue.gif . Gaming should be better as well on the new rig.

Thanks for all the comments!

I had a WD raptor in the last desktop. I am going to buy at least a 256gb SSD drive in the next couple of weeks. Not really sure which one yet.
Crucial M4, Vertex 4 or Samsung 840 or 830.

Not too sure on the ocz drives or maybe its just the controller.
