Can't shut down Windows 8! so frustrating

So I just built the rig in my sig. Everything works great except for when the computer goes to sleep or when I try to shut it down. When it goes to shut down, the monitor powers off after seeing the shut down screen making it look like it powered off, but the fans and Q-Code LEDs are still lit up and running. It will just stay this way until I hold the power button to turn it off.

I have seen numerous threads with people having a similar issue. I have tried running without a video card installed, with only 1 stick of ram, with Windows Fast Bootup disabled, updated my BIOS, swapped out the power supply... anything I can think of to make sure it's not a hardware issue.

Anyone here experience anything similar? I'm trying to resolve the issue before just resigning to never powering down or letting it go to sleep. Thanks!

I had this same issue too for the longest time, I don't know what exactly it was causing it but I had switched back to 7 for awhile and then recently switched back to 8 with a reformat and haven't had the problem manifest since.

What I suggest is updating all your drivers like network controllers especially fiddling with the power options in the bios, it has to be a setting/confliction in either the bios or drivers.

Minimize your peripherals plugged in also.

Whats your current bios version?

Like Dilli , there are many devices which can keep system up , even though OS seems to shutdown .. check like LAN , WLAN or any other device which can wake up the OS/System from Sleep

also try disabling services which is not important for operation .. check in safe mode if its shuts down properly ?

Thanks, I'll try checking it out in safe mode when I get home after work tonight.

So I tried shutting down in safe mode. This time the monitor never shut off and the spinner on the Shutting Down screen froze. My next step is to try and boot linux from a usb drive and see if I get any shutdown issues with that.

Well I tried running Ubuntu from a dvd and I get the same freezing issue when shutting down in Linux. I'm guessing this suggests a hardware issue. Now I'm off to try and figure out what hardware exactly it is that's causing the issue.

If it's a hardware issue, I'd point at the CPU or MoBo. MoBo being the most likely of the two.

Woohoo! I found that resetting the CMOS fixed the issue for me. I don't know what exactly that did in order to fix it but for now I'm not complaining.
