Noobs First HTPC build..suggestions?

I am relatively new to building computers and I wanted to start off with a HTPC. could you guys take a look at my build and give me some tips. Ideally i want it to be used as a fileshare server for my house and be able to watch 720p/1080p mkv movies flawlessly while using some background processes like utorrent. I would like the htpc to run almost 24/7 but im not sure if I will run into any sort of heat issues. The case comes with a 250W psu, i tried to use a PSU calculator and it says I will be ok but I am not too sure.

My current setup: Boxee box streaming from my desktop pc

edit: my hardware finally arrived.

pretty big issue...the PSU is slightly touching the CPU fan and its making an awful sound. Might be a case picking fail not too sure how to proceed

also forgot to add in: I might try to find a cheap SSD to run the OS and use the 1TD harddrive just for data. Is this overkill?

An APU is great for HTPC's, and the mobo is also a fine choice. I would go for the samsung memory, just because it is 1600 Mhz, but really corsair and samsung both make excellent memory. As for the harddrive i would upgrade that SATA II drive to some SATA III, like a WD Black. I don't really see the need for a SSD in a HTPC.

Can't really comment on the remote controller, as I have no knowledge about, else off it looks like a decent build. Good luck wink.gif

Hmm wait, you have a boxee box? why not just make it a file server(only) and stick it next to your desktop PC? You can use the boxee box to stream from your file server. In reality a HTPC with the videos on it is a bad idea for a HTPC, Because if the files are on that HTPC, you will not be able to make another for a separate room. It would be better to have 1 server hosting the files and small HTPC boxes playing from the server.

File servers and HTPCs are not very taxing AT ALL, you can use an AMD E-350 for both boxes.

But for now, since you have a boxee box, I would just make a server for file hosting, it should save on electricity, so your main rig doesn't need to be on all day tongue.gif

Thanks for the tip guffer, I will look into getting a sataIII drive.

Iron Man, I forgot to mention that I just bought another tv and need a streaming device like boxee box so I figured I'd kill two birds with one stone with a htpc that can plan hd content. The boxee will be moved to the old tv smile.gif

Completely understandable, the only problem is scalability. You will not be able to add too many more HDDs for movies unless you grab a pretty big case.You could always get one of those little android devices and run XBMC on it. I think they are ~$40 or something. That way you can build a file server instead of trying to do an all in one sort of thing. .

for the sake of making this htpc cheaper what if i were to use a AMD A4-5300 Trinity 3.4GHz (3.6GHz Turbo) Socket FM2 65W Dual-Core, do you know if dual core would be able to run 1080p videos and also download torrents at the same time

should be fine, I would only get one of those to start out with. I have never used them but I have heard people were running little XBMC boxes. Not sure how good they are though.

so it turns out that there is no clearance between my PSU and my cpu fan. Not too sure how to proceed, should I either a. try to find a cheap smaller psu (current one is 65mm) or b. try to find a smaller fan for my cpu heatsink (fan is ~20mm, fan and heatsink together ~55mm) ?

You can use a lower Profile CPU Cooler like.
