I hate the v7 client

Thread Starter
It's difficult to configure.

It never keeps the settings.

It crashes constantly.

Its PPD estimates are never correct.

It does nothing better than the v6 client.

I challenge you to prove me wrong on any point.

I still use the console method with separate SMP and GPU clients. Works fine for me.

You can be getting 200k ppd with that 580 of yours... try that with v6 rolleyes.gif

I used to think the same thing, but then I got 150k ppd from a single gpu.

That's a quaint little anecdote. Care to share a more complete story?

V7 has beta 8057 gpu units that get massive amounts of ppd, I get 160-178k ppd on my 570's

I've had no problems with v7 other then the fact its consoles ppd are way off, but I use HFM anyways so that doesn't matter to me.

Mine saves its settings and it took me under 5 minutes to get everything set-up and your crashes are due to an unstable overclock. A4 units pushe you equipment a lot harder then v6 which can cause a previously stable oc to become unstable, but a slight bump in v-core should solve the crashing.

I personally will never go back to v6. My ppd has increased greatly on all equipment. My 3570k went from 28k ppd on v6 and is now at 35-40k ppd in v7

Im sorry to hear that you got issues with V7 but you are incorrect on all of that. There where some issues at the beggining with ppd calculations but thats not the case now. The new V7 has better wu's, auto start, multiple passkeys and a few other things that V6 dont have. Sorry to tell you that your are dead wrong about V7 and your issues might come from some where else in your system.

The only issue that you listed that it actually has is not keeping the settings, unless you are on an older client the rest are non-existent unless your oc is unstable causing the crashing. As for not saving the settings, make the changes, save and completely close out of the client and you should be good.

From what I've been told, the 8057 work units are available for v6, as well. I haven't actually gotten one yet, so that may not be accurate.

As for stability, I'm as certain as I possibly can be about my system's stability. By some strange twist of luck, I managed to get v7 folding without any problems under Ubuntu. It saved all my settings and everything. It has been stable for six months now. But suddenly, the OS is messing up and it keeps shutting everything down with no explanation. So I tried v7 in Windows. It's a nightmare. When I can even get it to run, the PPD is ridiculously low.

I actually did an experiment with my Infinity Wildcard rig. With all of the same settings, TPF on a 7623 WU under v6 was 5:32. Under v7 it went up to 7:28. How can this be due to anything other than the client?

I've tried that. As I mentioned above, I only got the settings to save once on my Ubuntu setup, and I have no idea how. I have tried your method and it has not proven successful.

As you guys can probably see, I'm venting a bit of frustration here. There is an ulterior, more meaningful point to this thread and that's what y'all are locking on to: I'd really like to fix this problem, not because I'm convinced that v7 is better in any way, but because I don't like the idea that there's something I can't figure out. Thank you all for your help.

7623 is one of the worse gpu units. You are probably on core 2.25 too which greatly reduces Fermi performance. You can prevent getting them by switching to core 2.22 and setting the client-type beta flag. With core 2.22 and beta enable, all you will get are 8018 and 8057 units. Here is a good explanation on how to get core 2.22 http://www.overclock.net/t/1321302/2012-forum-folding-war-team-vikings/340

I had V7 set up in Ubuntu and for some reason the V7 screen was to big and I could not get to the save button at the bottom, I finally figured out I could hit control+s and it would save it
