PC - Gaming + OC rig advice.

Hi , I'm new to OCN and well , over locking as a whole. I'd like to ask for advices on what would be a decent rig that can work medium - high on modern games and a little over clocking. What does "K" behind the mobo and CPU means?
To give you advice on a new rig, we would need to know your budget. Simple as that, but I would recommend that you lurk around the forum for a bit to gain some knowledge.

As for the K at the end of newer generations of Intel processors, its because they are unlocked and therefore overclockable. If you are going to but an I5 or I7, you really want to but a K-version. Not only because you can gain massive performance from overclocking, but also for value, if you are going to sell it later on.

Hope it helps wink.gif

K or Black Edition, when used to describe any processor from Nehalem series Intel core, means the multiplier is unlocked, which makes overclocking VASTLY easier. And post a budget, and wheter or not you'd like an Intel or AMD CPU and nVidia or ATi GPU.

Budget wise would be about $700+- and what is the difference between an i5 and an i7? Other than higher core speeds.

I will try and put something together as a suggestion, and the difference between the I5 and the I7 is that the I7 features multithreating, which means that it has 4 extra virtual cores. Though for gaming no more than an I5 is needed, since games don't really take advantage of multithreating at all. An I5 3570K is an ideal processor to build a mid-grade gaming rig around thumb.gif

Do you think getting a hitachi 1tb would be better instead? By the way wouldn't getting the Asus p8z77-v lk hinder my oc capabilities due to its power phrase? About the power color gpu , is it factory over clocked? Will it be able to be further over clocked by about 250hz?

There will easily be better components for you, but you are going to have to spend more money on it then.

I would have chosen The Asus p8z77 Pro and the Asus DCUII or MSI TF instead of the reference design, and possibly a SSD for the boot drive. But again more money would have to be spent. And as for the hitachi HDD, its fine. I just put something in there for storage.

I wouldn't mind spending about +100 ahead of my budget for something that'd improve my overall capabilities. Ssd wise , would it really boost boot up timings tha much to be noticeable in real life?
