FX 41xx vs 960T Power consumption

Thread Starter
Hi,

I am planning on buying the Vishera but it will take more than a couple of months before it releases in my part of the world.

I have a damn good change of getting a FX 4170 as one my colleague may buy a laptop and drop the Desktop.

What I just want to know is the amount of power consumption on idle and on high OC and heavy work loads like watching HD movies and playing FSX and X plane 10 between these CPUs. Because since a lot reviews say that they are bad on power consumption.

Any reliable charts and members using the FX 41xx series please let me know.

Please avoid commenting about the performance between these two chips. Unless of course someone has already seen the performance personally.

960t is my current chip.

I'm guessing you have seen:

Power.png

I know it doesn't have the 960T and it's only looking at stock speeds, but it should give you some idea what to expect. Remember your 960T uses less power than the X4 980 or 1100T shown because it's a 95w CPU (unless you unlock cores or significantly overclocked) while the FX4170 is a 125w CPU.

Thanks, it looks good, as the review does state that the 4170 power consumption is almost comparable to the Phenom.

You're going to be severely disappointed in that FX4170;You can't say I didn't warn you.It has half the cores
of 960T and the cores it does have are slower.

I am getting it at a very cheap price and I can also use it on my Linux server as I feel the BD is a server based design.

The price for a brand new 4170 in India is around $ 140 and I can pick it up for around $90 as it is a used one.

I know the 960t is a terrific chip and I am not actually looking at replacing it, I have an another board where I could put the 960t on and use the AM3+ board for the 4170.

I own a FX-4170 and a few Phenom IIs.
The FX-4170 does has quite low power consumption when idle and you can use high multipliers together with CnQ, so if you server is idle most of the time I guess you could buy the FX-4170. In all other situations a Phenom II is superior though.

As a FX-4100 owner, the CPU gets a bad rap, it is not nearly as slow as everyone makes it out to be. The power consumption is even lower then most of the sites reviews because the ViD on the chip is set way to high out of the box.

The Chip I have defaults to 1.325v in bios (full clr Cmos), but requires only 1.15v under load @ 3600mhz. For comparison to your 4170, it needs only 1.225v @ 4000mhz. When you are not pumping way more power then you need to into these chips, they use a lot less power.

OP, do you plan to do any kind of OC's or is this stock operation only?

If your running all stock the FX-4170 will be faster then the 960T in a Linux environment.
