Hey homies. Just put together a rig with a Q6600 and a GTX560. Having some performance issues. Before we proceed let me fill you in on specs:

Q6600 OCd to 3.2ghz
6gb DDR2-800
GTX560
1650x1050 resolution
P43 motherboard

I am getting poor performance in BF3, the game I built this rig for. Here is the kicker though. I am only getting 70% load on my CPU and GPU. I could understand begin CPU limited a bit more if I were getting 100% load on the CPU.

As far as performance goes, if I run all high settings, I get about 30-35 fps average with dips in to the low 20s. If I run medium, I get about 50fps average with dips in to the 40s.

Morning corky,

If you run furmark, does it hit 100% or not? Also you might want to check temps to make sure it's not thermal throttling. I doubt it is but it's something you may want to check.

EDIT - If it were me, I'd set my FSB to 400mhz, set my FSB:DRAM ratio at 1:1 and bench it with that. It'll give you a 1:1 contention ratio which is what you're looking for with the Q series processors...

I have not ran furmark, but I will do that tonight. As far as temps go, I am really low on both. This rig is in my basement and it is chilly down there.

As far as FSB/ram, I am already at 400fsb (8x400=3200) with a 1:1 with ram.

Like I said, it's an odd issue.

Straight up 560. Non-Ti. PSU is an antec earthwatts 500. Not the greatest, but up to the task in my opinion.

From reading around and such, it looks like some Q6600 people run smooth, and some run a bit choppy and slow like me. I might attempt a reinstall of drivers, possibly a reinstall of OS.

Another option I have is to swap out the 560 for my 5850, which is about the same as far as performance. If the 560 runs slow in my Sandy setup, I will have my answer.

Though i would have expected the Q6600 to need to open up a bit further, I dont think it is bottlenecking you thta badly..

What is getting me is the 70% load on the GPU and the CPU. That is what has me really scratching my head. Everything I have learned would have me believe that one or the other would be pegged, especially if performance is low.

I guess we will see. There are literally thousands of posts like this all over the web. None of them ever really come to a solid answer.

I am going to tinker with it and let you guys know how it goes. I built this rig for peanuts, and have it at a workbench, but I would like to be able to escape and play some BF3 away from my family from time to time. Here is hoping we get there.

are each core working? the game seems to do well with 4 or less cores really, but I think you might just need to pump more juice into the CPU

Though at that point, not sure how much overclocking room you have left on a 500 watt

I think 3.4 is about all I can get out of the board. I pumped volts into it for 3.6 and she wasn't close to stable.

I will do more analysis tonight on individual loading of the cores.

I can handle playing on medium if I have to, I am just surprised at how bad this card is compared to other results around the web.

UPDATE:

Clocked up to 3.4 to try to pinpoint my issue. Ran GPU-z to measure GPU load, and opened task manager to see CPU loading on all cores.

CPU load was at about 75% on each core. GPU load was under 50%. I upped some of the detail and the GPU load increased to around 70% and CPU load stayed about the same. So I upped the detail more to all high settings, and GPU load and FPS dropped dramatically. CPU load remained at around 75% on all cores. No CPU spikes, but the occasional GPU spike.

I don't feel I am CPU limited. I think I am having issues with the card. I am going to try some older drivers. If that fails to deliver results, I am going to swap out the 560 for my 5850.
