Need Opinion on $1000 Build - Page 2

I would go with the microcenter bundle and get the asrock extreme 4 motherboard. While the gigabyte board is nice, you are already kind of scrapping the upper limits of your budget.

For ten dollars more, I would get a 7200 RPM drive. http://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Barracuda-3-5-Inch-Internal-ST1000DM003/dp/B005T3GRNW If at all possible, stay away from low rpm drives no matter what the use is.

I would also choose your favorite flavor of the phantom 410. It is a bit better built than the cooler master one, and it has a small window to show off some of your hard work.

Lastly, if at all possible, I would TRY and put a GTX 670 into this build. Even if you have to wait until black friday to get some of this stuff for cheap, it would be worth the wait.

Dont Seagate HDDs have problems? And isn't the Amd gpu line suppose to be better in every aspect against the nvidia line?

I'd look for a 7200RPM HDD and catch one of the deals on 240-256GB SSD. Even if it's not the fastest 256GB, is your friend going to notice in real-world use? The slowest SSD is still worlds better than loading stuff off an HDD, and 120GB is not going to cut it for long if his Steam folder is like many of ours.

I chose the components to overclock them a little bit. just to squeeze out the extra performance.

Then i think u might need a slightly better cooler then the one u chose. Other then that seems solid.

For $5 more I might switch to the WD Caviar Blue drive - it will outperform the Green. Nothing wrong with the Green, though. Overall a solid build.

I went with the 212 evo myself this past week.

I haven't done too much overclocking, as i literally just put this build together on saturday. But I can tell you at a 4.00ghz OC, my cpu at full load only hits 60, which is definitely an acceptable number.

In short: that cooler is fine if you're ok with mild-ish overclocks. You wont be hitting anything crazy, but you'll definitely be able to squeeze extra performance out of that. 3.4->4.0ghz, along with 60C on load, are respectable OC numbers for air cooling. Especially on an Ivy that runs hotter than Sandy.

I would be fine with 4.00 GHZ. Just an extra boost for a little money. plus the stock one is just ugly.

Well i think thats a matter of preference. Altough 60 degrees is still safe i dont feel comfortable with my computer getting so hot. Especially with an air cooler "dumping"all that heat in the case wich means u will need some good airflow to get the heat out.

Im at an 4,3 Ghz overclock with an 3570K wich only gets 29 degrees idle and 40 degrees full load with an H100. Im not saying he should get an H100. Just a slightly better cooler to keep the temps down abit. Like the Scythe Mugen for example. Good performing cooler for an affordable price.
