Why 4GHz?

Thread Starter
Is there a sweetspot for CPU speed or is it just about the nice round number? I have done it 'just because' but questions for me is whether it is worth the higher temperatures or not.
I'm at 3.6 with low volts as that seems sufficient but wondered if I should push further? I need about 1.4v for 3.8 and 1.425+ to crack 4GHz. Then CPU temps creep into the 50s when priming and I would rather they didn't.

Cheers, I will continue googling this for myself. I have decided on 2600 for thr CPU-NB.

Because it was a big thing at one time to crack the 4Ghz barrier, with the advent of Sandy Bridge, and newer AMD chips, 4Ghz has become a bit mundane so 5+ is the new targets.

With the 1090t, I found 3.8 to be the sweet spot for temps/performance. Having temps in the 50s for prime is perfectly normal for that CPU.

Your chip can do 3000mhz as the cpu nb frequency. It increases performance substantially.

However fast you want to run it is cool. integer GHz marks are like boy scout badges - most of them don't matter in the long run.

Did you have a link I can read up on this please? Also for all uses?? Are you assuming RAM at 1600+ as I am only running 1333 for tighter timings.

Lol, I suspected as much.

It's mainly for games and snappy desktop performance (chrome). Thank you for the replies.

3600mhz CPU @ 1.275v / 2600mhz CPU-NB @ 1.125v You will be happy with temps and speed.

Some need even less voltage

your not even close to pushing your unit's limits.
I'm a former 980BE and 1100T owner and my 1100T with a voltage tweak hit 4.0GHz and better cooling I know I could have got 4.2GHz..
a good VRM motherboard and cooling is all you need.
(which you seem to have) - motherboard

as for sweet spot being a nice clock and low voltage, mine was around 3.8GHz...

http://www.anandtech.com/show/3877/asrock-890fx-deluxe-full-review-and-an-investigation-of-thuban-performance-scaling/7

"What we did not expect was that a similar pattern would emerge from our CPU-NB testing. Our experiment with Thuban’s CPU-NB was truly strange. In applications that can take advantage of as many cores as 6, the gains achieved by CPU-NB overclocking was rather small. It’s there, but not to the point of writing home about. On the other hand, overclocking CPU-NB greatly benefited less-threaded applications, namely games. This can also be observed from the X264 HD 3.0 test, where the less intense first pass yields much better scaling with CPU-NB overclocking than the second pass."

Keep in mind, you are to keep HT link speed close to 2ghz.
