3 HDD dead so far, only SSD gets detected

So to cut to the chance, i RMA a WD Caver Black 1TB HDD 3 times, and all the 3 HDD that i got did not get detected under my UEFI(bios). I checked to see if SATA ports were the problem but nope. I have an SSD (Kingston Hyper X) that is the only drive that gets detected everytime, on all the SATA3 ports. I used different cables on the SSD as well to see if any cable were f'ed up but nope. All the cables and SATA port are good.

So why is it that out of the 3 HDD that i RMA, none of them get detected?

The motherboard is an Asrock Extreme4 Z77. Under the Dr.Debug, i get an A6 which means SCSI detect. << Only get that if i have the SSD connected. If i dont i get A9, which is Start of Setup.
Just gave up. Have SSD running only now

Did you try drivers or the storage mode on your BIOS (or UEFI)? I haven't used UEFI yet but in my bios I have a storage mode that sets it from IDE for HDD's and AHCI for SDD's. I remember one time I had it set at AHCI and I was trying to boot with my regular HDD but it was giving me some boot issues until I changed it to IDE.
What's going on.

The HDD doesnt get detected at all so i cant have it set to IDE, however under the Storage Config, i get everything to IDE, but still no HDD shows up. I got some weird message, "Using PCIE Gen 2 Can't find any device".
I switched back to AHCI snice IDE didn't help.

Oh one more thing i tried that without the SSD connected.
When i had the SSD connected and set Storage config to IDE, it would not load up windows 7 (From my SSD). So it was just a loop, kept on going to the"Press F2 for this and that" and then "Stating Windows" and then back to "Press F2...bla bla bla". So i had to switch everything back to AHCI so i can get windows to start.

Still the other 2 WD HDD are not detected frown.gif

Also when i go to Device Manager, under IDE ATA controllers i see My SSD connected and then there is ATA Channell. 0 and ATA Channel 1. My 2 HDD are connected to SATA 0 and SATA 1 so could that mean the HDD are detected actually but somehow i cant see them in UEFI?

well if you can see them in device manager try running the chkdsk command in command prompt. If it can detect it should run a test on it for bad sectors and stuff.


Also check the firmware on your UEFI.

Ran the CHKDSK command and got this

On total disk space, its 111.785 GB so i guess HDD is not detected?
Have the latest firmware also.

Soo the HDD is NOT dead. I got my SATA to USB reader and it detected the HDD. I initialized the HDD and assigned it a drive letter.

Now however, when i connected it to the mobo, in the UEFI, it does not detect it nor does it show in Disk management... What gives? It shows when i connected it by the SATA to USB but now it doesnt show it when i connect it to the Mobo?

I'm thinking it has something to do with the SATA ports on the mobo but my SSD gets read in all of the SATA ports mad.gif

As you can see, the 1TB HDD is there, but only when connected thru the SATA to USB
Just gave up. Have SSD running only now
