Looking to build a new computer

Thread Starter
I have an old system I built back in 07 with a Q6600 and it has served me well but alas I am starting to feel like my computer lacks and can't handle new games as well. I haven't really kept up with parts or tech and was wondering if I need to upgrade or am I ok with the system I have, maybe just need a new videocard (using a GTX 275)? or would a complete new system be more worth it?
Your system is showing it's age, no doubt, but it's not that bad IMO. How soon are you wanting to refresh your system? What's your budget? You've got AMD's new gen cards coming in a couple months, Intel's haswell processors and nvidia's new cards in roughly 6 months. I would at least wait and see how AMD's new cards pan out. At the very least, it would allow you to pick up a 7xxx series card a bit cheaper, then if you aren't satisfied you can upgrade cpu/motherboard. I don't think it's outside the realm of possibility to see nvidia's offerings take a price cut soon in the light of AMD's new gen coming soon, and the recent 12.11 driver improvements making nvidia look a bit soft and overpriced.

If I were you, I would probably be looking at an ivy based system with latest gen gfx in mid January. Just my opinion.

is there any reason to buy intel? what about amd? amd is cheaper right? is the performance that bad? I would be looking to spend roughly 2k on a build, and intel is kind of pricey.
That's not too bad a build. If I were in your position I'd hold off until Haswell (4-5 months) to get my moneys worth. By then AMD would've released their new 8000 Radeons.

here is my two cents, your core 2 quad is still a fine cpu. if your running it and your extremely happy with it just look at a new gpu. there are socket 775 motherboards by both asus and gigabyte that will accept ddr3 and if you want to do it you could buy one of those boards and jump to ddr3 but still continue to use your q6600 and then drop some cash on a new gpu. what resolution do you game at? also are you currently satisfied with the performance of the q6600? I'm going to drop a bit of a bombshell on you with some information......there are no games currently on the market that use anymore then 4 cpu cores....and at the current coding rates it doesnt look like that will change for some time to come. if you have the itch to upgrade and are only using one gpu and want to stick with the kentsfield a new ddr3 socket 775 board and some new ddr3 memory will move you forward just fine and that will save you money that you could drop on a new gpu of your choice. it would be helpful to know what kind of hardware you are running as you only mention that you have the q6600 OP.

I too have started researching upgrades for my system. Its good to hear that the Q6600 is still a strong performer. I think I'll just replace my 4870x2 with a 7950 if I can find a great deal during Cyber.Mon.

My main complaint lately has been the video card. Skyrim is tearing and flickering and the card is screaming loud when I play anything in Fullscreen mode. I also have a 256GB SSD coming in the mail this week. That will certainly be an improvement.

i seriously would look into a newer p5g41 chipset motherboard and alot better gpu and some ddr3 memory. my core2 quad server still provide lots of performance.
