[Build Log] Oneminde's Mad Alien. - Page 7

As we know, money is expensive and throwing them out the window is not my style. So I've been again looking around regarding the MadAlien and found a core that I so far am very happy with in terms of performance. What I am talking about is the Core i7-3930K. Its a Hexa core CPU that should handle 4.0-4.2 GHz easy and cost me half as much.

Time for an update in the list of components:

--- Update # 2 ---- Price is in sek and for me as a reference.

1. pcs: Corsair Obsidian 800D Price; 2 165,-
1. pcs: ASUS RAMPAGE IV EXTREME X79 S-2011 E-ATX. Price; 3 095,-
1. pcs: INTEL CORE I7 3930K - Hexa core 3.2 GHz (3.8 GHz). Price; 4 495,-
2. pcs: MSI GTX 680 Lightning. Price; (2x 4 531,-) 9 062,-
1. pcs: Corsair 32GB DDR3 DOMINATOR PC12800 1600MHZ. Price: 1 990,-
1. pcs: Corsair AX 860i - 860W PROFESSIONAL SERIES MODULAR PSU. Price; 1 910,-

4. pcs: SAMSUNG 830 SERIES 256GB SSD in RAID 0. Price; (4x 1 549,-) 6 196,-
2. pcs: WESTERN DIGITAL BLACK 3.5" 4TB 7200RPM - media storage. Price; (2x 2 999,-) 5 998,-
1. pcs: Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex 3TB - back up - have one -

Monitors:
1. pcs: NEC MultiSync PA271W-BK: 27" IPS professional monitor - calibration. Price; 9 855,-
1. pcs: BenQ G2220HDA - 21.5" (1920x1080) - have one -

Total (2012/12/27): 46 756,-

Ofc, this does not include water cooling components or other upgrades, but it contains a case that I will use and modify.

Regarding cooler, I am yet again looking at a thermoelectric cooler (peltier). Foremost because it is quiet and with ultra silent fans that works bellow 20 db or close, that should work out fine and mount the radiator on the cold side and insulate properly.

Time for a new reply.

This cooling project is becoming a pain in the ass. For one, I want things to be cool, in the access of bellow room temperature which is 16-18 C degree's and not 21 C. A good friend of me explained why it is not 21 C degree's as the official number. It has to do with wine storage and such cellars have a range between 16-18 C degree's (now you know). The other part is noise and that should also be very low.

Which renders compressors out of the question since they run between 40-60 decibels (depending on model, sound insulation and so forth)
What is left are radiators that are cooled with fans or peltiers. One can also use cooling fins only and have a quiet solution. But lets look at something important.

- How much heat does the PC actually produce ? -
In order to figure this out, we need to look at the specs given by the producers and translate watt to BTU
Here are the numbers for the PC I am going to build.

Idle and max rating
For the CPU I am considering that is 130W (max) for the i7-3930K
For the motherboard that is 100-300W with roughly 116W in idle (including RAM modules)
For the GPU (graphics cards) that number is 100-300W times two since I will use 2 video cards (200-600W)

That gives me a total watt range between 430 to 1030 watt. The higher number is ofc under 100% load and OC and 100% is most of the times only periodically, it is therefore more realistic that the average watt will be in the middle which is roughly 500-600W.

Now, lets turn watt into BTU. 1 watt = 3.414 Btu/h.
430W * 3.414 = 1468.02 Btu/h and the higher limit 1030W * 3.414 = 3516.42 Btu/h
With the average rating of 500-600W - 1707-2048,4 Btu/h, that is what we want to remove and doing so, theoretically should produce 0°C degree surfaces. That is theoretically, so understand that there are many things that comes into the picture here, so expected number will always be a bit higher than the theoretical.

In other words we need something that can remove this Btu/h and we are looking at the entire system as usual with water cooling. Some of the heat will escape during transport to the cooler for free. Looking around, I figured that perhaps I could combine peltiers and mount them on the radiator and then mount cooling fins on the hot side to remove the heat. That is still the option and nothing new, but I think I found something that can be bought as is and combine all the things I am looking for besides building some of the parts needed.

First of all, the one part that generates more per square cm is the CPU and if we can remove some of the heat on that one before it is circulated to the main system cooler, that would be great. So lets do that with a peltier.
The images bellow is an example of how that unit could look like

A possible fan could be mounted to the heatfins. The waterblock will be mounted between the peltier and heatfins and must be a model that have proper connection between the two sides so that heat can be transferred to the heatfins.

Anyway, the peltier I am looking at is a 224W - that is the heat exchange temperature. Qmax is 224W at 27°C degree and Qmax 245.6 at 50°C degree. Amp rating is 12A.
http://www.conrad.com/TEC1-24116T200%2c-224WW-Peltier-Element%2c-%26ge%3b-60-%26deg%3bK%2c-28.1VV.htm?websale7=conrad-int&pi=189117&Ctx={ver/7/ver}{st/3ec/st}{cmd/0/cmd}{m/websale/m}{s/conrad-int/s}{l/int/l}{sf/%3Cs1%3E189117%3C/s1%3E/sf}{p1/199e42deaa35290c98a15ae52cc87ffc/p1}{md5/23e3c07519d30b31d1b17d9966b6724e/md5}

So depending on the differance between the hot and cold side determine the operational efficiency.

The waterblock then transferees the hot liquid to the main cooling unit which in this case is a combined peltier cooler and raidiator - see attached picture.

Thermoelectric cooling assemblies of liquid-to- liquid type produced by Kryotherm and this model is 400LT.
As of right now I do not know the cost of this unit and in worst case, I would need to build something custom. But I will contact them and quote for a price (will get back to this). The information I have on this unit is:

Qmax = 600W @ 24V and 24,5 for the main cooler
and
Qmax = 245.6W for the CPU cooler. That is combined 845.6W or 2886.878 Btu/h of heat removed at 100% efficiency and it is very quiet.

I like that, so lets see where we end up at in regards to price.

*Qmax is the maximum heat load the peltier can transfer from the cold side to the hot side assuming it is running 100% efficient.

I moved on. You can check this tread instead

http://www.overclock.net/t/1417439/build-log-mad-alien-pc-a70-murder/0_20

I have too many things on my plate and decided to go for something ells. I am also researching and replicating (going to) props that was used in Back to The Future II and II and paying of debt, and with a limited income, everything takes time. Anyway, this tread is available for information only now a days.
