Lost in thought on new machine.

Thread Starter
Hey guys.

So i currently have all the hardware from both the rigs i have listed on here.

I am currently only using the OPTY 165 in asus a8n32sli deluxe board. 2 gb OCZ ... The 3500+ and a8n sli are on the shelf. (This system is a beast. Still using my bfg 6600gt and everything.)

I dont want to loose any data. I do want my next pc to be compact and beautiful. I dont have the time to make the custom case I want. I'd kind of like to take the cool n quiet approach while still being fully functional.

I havent really kept up with things over the past couple years. Had a kid and life just took a much different path.

Figure Ill build a new machine then use my opty and such to make a nice little data server. This way I can have a clean and functional rig and put my mess elsewhere lol.

I guess I'll go with a fx6100. Doubt I'll overclock unless I can drop 2 cores and keep temps low. Then again, that trick may not work anymore...
Trying to decide if I should go with a SSD or not. I'd have to get at least 256 considering I always dual boot with linux. Hell when the only PC game I played was UT 2k4 I never booted windows. Can't wait for the steam port.

Ram isnt a big deal, Ill grab something.

Where I'm really stuck is the motherboard and Heatsink. I have a zaleman flower but I've read that I cant put those on am3+ chips.

Also, I prefer a motherboard without onboard vid and with lots of cooling. I searched for 'best am3+ matx' and came up with this thread Right Here and a couple more talking about the older chipsets being better for one reason or another and lack of VRM cooling. ETC

I'm still using xp pro. I just cant get into the new windows.. Am I gonna have to get windows 7 with the new hardware or can I hit it with xp pro 64 and ride on through?

Meh.. Ranted enough.

What do you guys think..

I would love to help but what exactly will the new computer be doing would be the one question I would have to ask, also, what is the budget, to start you off however

Motherboard- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128514 unfortunately there aren't any 990fx Matx motherboards (at least that I know of)

CPU- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819113286 Vishera Has lower heat and a Higher IPC than Bulldozer so it OC's Better and has much better preformance

Now from What I'm reading it seems like you want a silent case in which case this fits the bill perfectly

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811146072

And also, You will need to get windows 7 (or 8, it might still be on sale for $15) and a new GPU as the 6600 won't work with newer OS's

Well It will be my new 'main' machine. So I'll be doing all my vid editing, all my sketchup, all my gaming ETC

As far as my budget goes... I can build it over a small amount of time if I need to.

I originally wanted to use THIS case. I love the way it looks. But looking at that motherboard (tho I have always been an ASUS guy) I may opt for one of these. Lian Li. its apperently a cheaper made lian li, but it may be worth it. Power supply choice would be an issue.

IDK why I want a small box so bad. I guess I've had this MONSTER Temjin TJ-03 taking up space forever, Its a great case but its MASSIVE. I am iffy about weather or not I can get a decent cooling setup into a smaller case. ( my xigmatek is only setup for a 90mm fan and barely fits in the temjin)

Guess I could always put those components into my temjin for now. rebuild the opty into a media server inside that little lanbox lite, sell off my old stuff, then get a case I like and finish it up.

Would my old power supply be up to the task with a newer motherboard? its a Enermax

If I use my old stuff I'd end up with something like this.
Motherboard 1 Motherboard 2

FX6300 (thanks again for that information )

240/256 GB SSD (should be more than enough for a linux install, windows 7 install and a few games. Kinda like this ADATA

I currently have a Xigmatek that needs a crossbow kit.

Ram, I'll have to look at. Figure I'll just grab some ddr3 1600 for the price. Ripjaws 16GB or 8GB

With the Gigabyte MBD and 16GB ram its around $575
With the MSI board and 8GB ram its around $520

If my power supply will run that, I think I'll be ok.

Ok, Well I'm sort of Biased towards mobo 2 seeing as I own one and love it, however, either would be a good option

I found This for the case http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811112352 it's a little more, but it has a similar style to the first case and fits a Full ATX

For Decent cooling you would probably want a horizontal cooler rather than a tower This one gets good reviews and will also cool the motherbaord and ram http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835103100

This Ram Overclocks like a Beast and is realitively inexpensive http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820147096

As for an SSD Sandforce based drives such as this Kingston http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820239046 will be faster, however, some people don't like sandforce drives and think that other drive are more reliable, in that case I would have to reccomend this Samsung http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820147138 Both are excellent drives

Personally I wouldn't trust that psu as Vishera is still a power hog and Capacitor Aging means that that PSU probably doesn't put out 600 watts anymore so maybe on of these

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817207013
or
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182132

Now you still need to factor a GPU in because Vishera has no onboard

The power supply inst a permanent solution. Just saves me a couple bucks at first. Gives me time to pick or build a case.
Vid card is something I will poke and pick around till i find something I can live with price/performance wise. A friend is supposed to be donating me a graphics card for another build, I can use that for a while if need be.

The real issue poked its head up today. My car needs a new rack -_-

Picking up that vid card today.
Gonna poke around at just getting a 939 matx board and running a SFF system as a media box. Get it all built and organized.

Then selling off all my extra 939 stuff.

Stupid car had to break -_-

So fun story. I got that vid card today. Its a EVGA 275GTX

power supply wont support it.. SO I'm gonna start with a power supply.

Looking at the suggestions above, I'm looking at this one.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817207022

Seems legit.

That unit is way too expensive for what it is, and its overkill for what you need it for, a 500w power supply should be plenty. This unit should be plenty for what you need http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817151119

I don't recommend "building as you can afford to" like this because it's very likely that by the time you have all of the pieces collected and ready to assemble and test, several of them may no longer be in their 30 day return policy window, which means that if you get a defective part, you will be going to the manufacturer and dealing with longer turn-around times.

For a coolnquiet approach to the PSU, get an 80+ gold rated unit or better. Consider a fanless model if you can afford it. The more efficient it is, the less heat it has to dissipate, resulting in lower fan speeds. If you go with a fanned unit, opt for a 140mm fan unit, not the 120mm or smaller. The Rosewill Capstone and Fortress series are worth a look.

the original idea was to buy a motherboard/ ram/ processer/ SSD and get the system running on my power supply, in my case, with this gtx275, with my xigmatek, ETC> Then build around that. (Like, get a good graphics setup, find or build a case i actually like,

Now I need to get a power supply first. My old 6600 is about shot as far as games and such go and i wanna get this 275 up and running. So My thought is, Spend the money, get a power supply and get the card in and functional on this box. Then after i pay off my rack&pinion and this bull**** medical bill i just got i can get a motherboard/ ram/ processer/ SSD setup and go from there.

I dont mind the overkill on the power supply, gives me options down the road. That's how I've kept the system i have going for so long.

Pretty pissed black friday is knocking the price right off everything I would have bought -_-
