eletrical noise from 7970

When my 7970 is under a slight load, such as watching a video stream. I can hear this very loud and annoying crackling sound coming from the 7970. It is not the fan as I've put my finger on it to stop it from spinning and the noise still persists. It lasts for 4-5 second spurts then stops, then will start again 2-3 seconds later.

Any idea what it could be and how to stop it?

Sounds like coil whine to me. If it's happening during video playback etc. right click on the flash video you are watching (youtube etc.) and go to settings and disable hardware acceleration to see if it helps.

If I'm playing a game it's goes from crackling/popping to a full blown buzz. It sounds like a cap may have blown or something. Looks like I have to RMA?

If it is really annoying then you could try and RMA it but you will find that alot of cards suffer from this problem. IIRC I dont think there is a fix so if you aren't completely satifsfied with your purchase then I would exchange it. After all it is alot of money smile.gif

My 7970 has coil whine when I get like 300fps+. Can't say I've ever had it on videos though.

same mine whines with high fps but not in movies or flash stuff usualy only in game menus where the fps are in 1000s.

I don't think this is coil whine, I'm talking about like a 50 DBA Constant Buzz whenever I am playing a game. I can here the buzz over the fan and any sound coming through my headphones.

I've gone thru 2 7970s and both had coil whine. I'm returning my 2nd and switching for a gtx 670. Some whine louder than others. The one on this one is fairly subtle, while my 1st one could be heard across the room.
You need to RMA them until you get one that doesnt do it.

my coil whine is really lound i hear it over 11 yate loons one fm121 and 4 hardrives along with my water pump Tho i dont hear it when i have my headphones on tho.
