Bought a new hdd, how to copy old hdd to new one?

Thread Starter
Just ordered one of these pups http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0036Q7MV0/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00 and it will be here Wed! Cant wait to replace my super old 300gb hitachi. But how do I get all of my files etc over to the new drive? Is it as simple as copy/paste and then boot from the new hdd, or do I need software to do this?
Thanks

You'll want software that makes an exact copy, otherwise your boot partition isn't going to be there and you'll be stuck with a drive that doesn't boot smile.gif You can use a trail of Norton Ghost, or there are plenty of other free 1:1 copy software out there thumb.gif

If you are just copying your old files a simple copy and paste will work, though I recommend using something like Terracopy where it can be set to double check that the file(s) actually made it to the new drive completely intact.

If it's a boot drive you need to clone it (to maintain master boot records etc.)) If it's data storage copy/paste.

Macrium makes a killer free clone program. Makes backup imgs too!

Just use the 'Clone Disk' option in EaseUS Todo Backup Free.

http://www.todo-backup.com/products/home/free-backup-software.htm

I haven't used it in a few versions, but it was dead simple when I last tried it.

Failing that, something like PartedMagic can clone from drive to drive. Just copy whole partitions over... or use the linux cmdline tool DD.

Edit: CloneZilla also works, if you don't mind a tool that resembles DOS era stuff. biggrin.gif
