They're all capable of working on the most used bitrates, and going beyond 24-bit and 44.1KHz is completely redundant and has no audible difference, so rest assured the medium of delivery doesn't matter - other than the optical lacking electrical connection and thus separating the two devices electronically.

It's the same bits and samplerates being sent (and as mentioned, higher than 44.1 and 48KHz is hardly relevant to increasing sound quality), and jitter is inaudible unless increased to artificially enormous numbers. (Source).

I'd be interested in hearing your testing methodology, just to be sure you've eliminated expectation and confirmation bias that are a direct result of sighted testing (nobody is extempt from it's side-effects). Without these your experience is only anecdotal evidence and relies on no valid proof and should not be taken seriously by anyone who believes in empirical science, or logic.

Also a quick question, having passive speakers and a receiver would allow me to expand my system and generally allow me for more customizability right? While active speakers are preset and that's it, no expanding

It's generally more practical to expand a surround receiver and passive speakers yes. The same receivers do have pre-outs (to connect with active speakers), but they're usually unbalanced and might pose issues, noise floor due to RFI/EMI inductance, or ground loops etc.. And balanced surround decoders are rarer and expensive usually.
