Learning about Hi-Fi - Page 3

Passion! I'm positively groud-loop phobic!

Actually right now I'm having issues making certain applications play nicely with a USB sound card, ALSA and PulseAudio in Lubuntu, so I'm resorting to using my motherboard's Realtek chip for sound instead of my Fast Track Pro, and oh boy am I hearing some interference from the motherboard and speakers that run their own ground.. Ground-lifted speakers are usually quiet, but these heavy studio monitors have their own grounds so just scrolling the mouse causes a very audible whirr on the speakers, anything IGP or CPU intensive results in very loud brrrz.. The noise drives me insane so I'm playing music loud all the time to drown out the static and interference.

I can record you a clip of this crap if you haven't heard what these problems sound like before, they might not be that commonplace with PC speaker sets which apparently have a ground-lifting transformer or are separated galvanically or something.. biggrin.gif Just so you know what you might run into without a pre-emptive plan and active sets, a RCA galvanic separator, or balanced cabling. It's the usual reason for me to recommend passive set-ups, many of my home DJ and audiophile friends have had similar issues so I've chosen not to expose anyone to the same headache and just tell them to go with passive if they want surround, multiple sources, or don't want a tabletop balanced USB interface. (Also sorry I tend to ramble a lot)

Yeah I've never had that issue and no need to record it. Also don't worry about rambling because it just shows how much knowledge and passion you have about your subject, so don't worry about that thumb.gif
