inherited server need help retrieving files

Thread Starter
as the title above shows, i've inherited a dell poweredge 1950 server. Its got vmware ESXi 4.0

i don't have the root password to log in.

does anyone know a way i can reset the password, without having to re partition the drives. i need to retrieve data that is stored inside.

could i extract the internal hard drive and load it to a hard drive to usb dock and access the files through linux?

or could i load linux such as fedora on to the server and access the files stored inside.?

im not very good with command line operations, id rather use a grub loader, or a gui to access files..

any help is mostly appreciated.

I'm not too familiar with ESXi installs, but assuming the drivers were partitioned with a file system that could be read in *nix, and are not encrypted...boot up to a live *nix CD and see if you can mount/browse the drives.

If they are in a raid array, that may complicate things depending on the raid implementation.

are you trying to access the esxi host files or the files of the virtual machines that were being run on it?

I never got around to installing esxi but with hyper-v the virtual machines store their data in a vhd or vhdx so youd have to attach those to a virtual machine to be able to access them.

Make an esxi usb stick and boot from it. Try mount the wms or add the raid to datastore to mount them. Would be a safe method if it works, it should.
