Lian Li D8000 double motherboard tray building project:

After a long search for a new case for my servers i only found the Lian Li D8000 compatible with my wishes.
I needed plenty of room for harddisks and extra space for future expansion like watercooling.
Also i wanted no futuristic case or rackmount cases.

I thought of buying the Termaltake WP200 but the build quality looks cheap.
There aren't yet any spare modules available for it ,not even for the W100 and WP100 which use the same modules and are already on the market for a long time. And it has a higher price.
The Lian Li D666 has room for 2 motherboards but i don't like the interior and total storage space options.
Adjusting the D666 with extra modules would not give me the end result i wanted.
After a long search and looking into this topic i decided to buy the D8000 and change the interior to fit two motherboards.

When using 2 systems i wanted the motherboard tray in the middle of the case and another one flipped.
For only 40 euro i bought a spare motherboard tray for the project.

At the end we attached both trays to each other with 2 bolts and spacers, if i want i can still take them out but i doubt i ever will.

Below some pictures of our (my sweet dad helped) work:

Has anyone successfully made use of the extra fan spots to more hard drive's?
I'm thinking of the 3 in the back and the 4 in the roof.

Also, do you want to make the fans on the middle wall push air on the motherboard or pull it away?

With three '4-in-3 Device Module' you can fit 12 more drives in the three back fan spot and still get to have fans there, in the roof I'm not sure how to get them there without them being in the way for your motherboard.

EDiT: Had to look for it, and I found a picture of how I did it in my 'Lian Li 343' cube way back when.

Will any hard drive cage work or is it a size requirement?
The one I had in mind was this 4 HDD + 2 SSD one (just need to remove the fan grill): http://www.lian-li.com/en/dt_portfolio/ex-36b1/
That will give you 12 HDD and 6 SSD in that space.

As for the roof, so can you DIY a solution, if you dont mind the lack of roof fans.
Get this, mount it to the fan spot, put hard disk in and screw it in: http://www.caselabs-store.com/flex-bay-120-1-120mm-fan-radiator-mount-pricing-varies/
It takes at most 50mm of space.

Also, if you dont have a motherboard that uses all 11 PCI slots, you can add a few of these: http://cpc.farnell.com/akasa/ak-hda-10bk/mounting-bracket-2-5-ssd-hdd-pcie/dp/CS28377

With 120mm fans you can mount them directly in the case since there's hole for 120mm fans at the back. Just secure the cage in the fan with screws and then from the outside with screws in the fans.

Did find three resellers with the case in stock in my country, and it's not on the End of sale list at Lian-Li http://www.lian-li.com/en/dt_portfolio/pc-d8000/ so there must be some in your vicinity.
