will 533 be enuf to o/c a core 2 duo?

Thread Starter
hey
im planning on getting a new cpu soon, either a amd x2 3600+ or a core 2 duo e6300. the core will cost alot more but it wont b worth it if i cant overclock. ive only got 533mhz ram, will that be enuf for atlest a 500mhz overclock? i dnt think the multipliers will have enough options for such low speed ram. but ive got 2gb's of it so buying new ram is not an option 4 me. by the way, heres the mobo's ill be getting

intel - gigabyte something s3 (forgot the model) or abit ab9 pro
amd - dfi infinity m2

Find the multiplier of the e6300 (it is 9 I think) and divide your RAM speed in half, and then multiply your halfed RAM speed by the multiplier. That's the formula for finding your maximum RAM-limited overclock. If the e6300 is built on a 9-times multiplier, you would be able to hit 2.394Ghz on it, since 533mhzRAM / 2 = 266, and 266 x 9 = 2394. An e6300 at 2.4ghz will tie if not beat an FX-62, which is a $700 processor, and it will sodomize an X2 3600+ and then offer it a towel to clean up the semen it has just thrusted into the X2's L2 Cache.
Trust me, I say this as an overclocker, not an intel owner .

EDIT: e6300 is 7x multiplier, which means you won't be able to run on a 1:1 overclock. I forgot the stock FSB was 266, Im used to 200.

Your memory will severely limit your overclocking room. I'm not familiar with whether the Gigabyte DS3 supports dividers below a 1:1 ratio, but if not your speed will be limitted to stock.

You might consider waiting for an E4300 to pop up on the market. It has a 200(400)mhz FSB rather than 266(533)mhz. That would be much better for overclocking.

If waiting until after Christmas is not an option...find out if the DS3 supports running memory at a lower mhz than your FSB. If it does, great. If it doesn't, go AMD.

-----------------------------------
E6300 has 7x Multi
E4300 has 9x Multi
X2 3800+ has 10x Multi

The irony here is, because of your memory you might actually get a better overclock out of an AMD system.
