I'm looking for a Blu-ray writer.

I don't want to spend more than about 100$ CAD I'd prefer if it didn't lock ripping speeds too.

Well here's a couple of Blue-Ray burners / writers that are below CA$100 HERE.

If I'm not mistaken though most of them have maximum speeds allowed when burning (which you can choose whether you want 8x, 10x, etc.) so in essence most of them are locked to a max speed.

The LG on the link I gave comes out to almost CA$72; it has a better access time but lower Cache compared to the ASUS and has a higher write / burn speed.

The ASUS comes out to CA$70 as well after rebate and all and does have a higher cache to make up for the slightly slower access time compared to the LG, but also has a slower burn / write time.

Both will be good burners as I've used either one for my rig and my brother's rig which I setup.

Hope this helps!

Burning speed isn't the issue it's the Ripping side of things.

Hmm if it's the ripping side of things isn't that controlled more by the type of software ripper your using? Of course this is also limited by the maximum read speed of a BD burner. Isn't it?

Firmware.

Hmmm, I know the Plextor drives (normally) are easier to unlock when it comes to riplock. I remember reading a thread about this and they say the instructions are in the manual of the product itself (to bypass riplock) and it has something to do with depressing the eject button.

HERE is the link to what I'm saying.

The 4th post by Jucius_Maximus mentions this. if that is the case these Plextor drives could be good candidates:

Here are some Plextor Drives!

As a last option the older BD writers didn't have riplock so a good candidate to look for would be an older model!

Good luck!

HERE is another site saying this Lite-On model is not rip locked.

Post #13 mentions that he has this particular Lite-on and it doesn't spin down to 1x speed (riplock) like the Asus and Samsung Models.

It's only $73.00 including shipping for it!

Hey Eagle I read in a thread before that the Pioneer Model BDR-205 wasn't riplocked and this model is the newer BDR207 model not too sure since i've read two posts that mentioned that the BDR207 wasn't riplocked but a user reported that it was.
