I understand what you are saying. I just don't understand how they can ban your account, when you received a gift from someone else that was charged back. Maybe de-activate the game for non payment. But ban the whole account?

Most retail-disc games require steam now a days huh? If not borderlands 2 was the last game im buying through steam.

I probably would never have let it go lol.

I find it funny how Valve bans people account for anything that goes wrong. You can have over $10,000 in games on Steam and they'll ban you for the smallest thing and according to their law you can't have back the games.

Basically, what that is showing is when you buy a game on Steam, you're just renting the game. That's why I mainly bought the Valve pack (HL2, L4D2, Portal, etc), any other game I EXTREMELY want to play, like Skyrim.

In this world, it's not worth getting pushed around by some Digital company when you're working and paying money for the products. I payed for it, why should they be the final owner?

I don't know if most do, but a larger number of games are just using steam for their DRM. Even if you get the box copy you have to put it on a steam account.

I think they took that stance against gifting since people would scam games and cheat online that way. I know someone else had the same thing happen from the same person and got their account back- they told support their account was stolen, and showed scans of CD keys to get it back. I didn't have any, apparently that was the only thing they'd take (paypal recipt or CC statement of some sort is not accepted apparently). Also I had already opened a ticket saying someone gifted the game so that wasn't an option anyways.

The only way to really protect yourself is to put all your games on separate accounts lol... otherwise you are at the whim of steams support, which can be pretty unforgiving.

I really don't like valve anymore. What happened to the company that made half life? Oh yea... Money.

They are just highway robbers at this point. "You looked at us funny X $'s in games is now gone, good day to you sir. "Reasonable Objection raised by customer" Valve Response: " I said good day! "

good luck with that the last TOS that they threatened to cancel accounts w/ games on them if you didn't agree to included a class action suite waver. Maybe that TOS was invalid because it used illegal force by them saying they'd terminate accounts?

Why not? Your own response proves that it works.

Valve is not your friend. Valve is a business. Every single decision they have ever made has been calculated to maximize their profit. They do not care about you.
You'll do almost anything to keep that 1500 dollar account, and Valve knows this.

Which is why Amazon has to treat you better. They would love to have power over your material possessions, to be sure. However, this is not practical, so they cannot screw over their consumers as fragrantly.

You don't own anything you buy from Valve, you license it's use from them. Valve has the ability to cancel these licences and revoke their service, unilaterally, for any reason, or no reason, at any time. You agreed to a contract to this effect when you signed up.

Yes. And they would have given the money back without a fight, because to dispute it would be a waste of resources. They ban people as a deterrent to such actions.

Right? Wrong? Useless and subjective terms that are no concern of Valve's, or any other business. It's not about "right", or "wrong". It's "is this legal?", "is this enforceable?", and "can we get away with that?".

To borrow a metaphor...you sold your soul to the devil and then wonder why things went to hell?

You'd lose your account and your case. Valves TOS is well thought out and should be quite legal in most places, and they would certainly pull the plug on your account to discourage further litigation from others.

Past generations could more reasonably expect instant gratification, because when we bought stuff, we had it. If I pick up a physical something at a store and pay cash money for it, it's mine, and I have my instant gratification.

Also, feeling that one is entitled to the fruits of one's own labor, or fair recompense for an exchange, is nothing new. Hell, it probably predates humanity.

Nothing happened to Valve.

People are simply delusional; they get sentimental and develop irrational loyalties.

One look at the ToS should tell anyone they are getting the ass end of the deal, by far, and this statement would have applied in 2004 too.

Lawsuits aren't the answer, not accepting crappy contracts, and turning your money over unless you honestly accept what you are getting in exchange, including all the stated and implied baggage, is.

I don't get it...Steam took your money without your permission and people are saying that you are wrong for filing a dispute? Come on guys, I like Valve too, but think about what you're saying before you leap to their defense!
