Lumia 920 arriving tomorrow, ATT allowed for early std upgrade

I've been using a Atrix 4G for the past 1 year and 9~ months at an attempt to get away from Apple (coming from an Iphone 4, same day it came out).
Anyways I was considering buying an Iphone 4s out of contract, and saving my upgrade (January 2013) but decided to give AT&T a call and see if I could charm my way into getting an early upgrade.

I phoned ATT on november 8th and explained my situation: Phone's screen digitizer was not fully working, already had a replacement once before, and AT&T had serviced me well so I'd rather stay with them if they can simply provide me with a solution for the phone, maybe a one time exchange? In fact I did not even ask for an early upgrade.
The rep was very polite and friendly, definitely convinced me that he was looking out for the customer not AT&T.

The gentleman said they couldn't do a warranty exchange nor help with the phone but he could ask his floor manager to see if he could approve a early upgrade. A few minutes on hold and the approval was authorized.
I could pick any Android or Windows phone at the subsidized price. I didn't make a choice that day.

The following day (Nov 9th) I was re approved for an upgrade, except for any phone. Android, Iphone, or Windows. I went for the Lumia 920 which shipped that same day, Nov 9th and should have been delivered on nov 10th... Except it was stolen at a Fedex texas facility.
A 2nd Lumia 920 was shipped to me yesterday and I should be receiving it by tomorrow.

We shall see how this phone goes. In the odd chance I return it what other phone should I keep my eyes out for?

I have always had upgrade eligibility 18 months into a contract with them without asking for it.
My 2 year date for my iPhone is 02/25/13, but I upgraded last month.

Sucks it was stolen though. Are they giving you the free wireless charger too?
I have really debated getting a 920 for myself (the upgrade was my wifes phone).

Oh man, we are in a similar boat. I too have an Atrix 4g. Bought mine the first week of March last year.
I really loved the phone when it came out, and it still is a good phone now. Mine is still in mint condition and works perfect. My biggest issue is support......or lack there of.

I have zero'd in on the 920 as my next phone as well as my wife's too. I really do like the Android notification pull down and the customization of it. I like the typing on the iphone better than the Android devices.

Windows 8 Phone, more specifically the 920, seem to be a nice mix of all of that. The notifications aren't there yet, but are said to be in the works.
Soooooooo

I say all that to say this. What is your time frame? Are you willing to wait a little bit or is it a now kind of thing?
If now, I would say look at the Optimus G, Note II (if you like bigger phones), Xperia TL (not much publicity, but a solid phone), iPhone 4s (inexpensive and a better deal than the 5 IMO), or the 8x (the best feeling phone I have ever held. absolutely wonderful aesthetics).

Now, if you are okay to wait a couple of months, I would say keep an eye out for Odin (sony 5" phablet with a really good camera), BB10, Nexus 4 (out now, but on back order) ,One X+, and potentially the GS4 (rumors are still flying around).

Now, before everyone tries to chap me about the blackberry 10 device, go read up on it. There are videos on crackberry.com that have some demonstrations on some of the different features of the device.
The design, performance, and battery life are supposed to be outstanding. It has basically identical specs to the Optimus G, with the exception it has a battery that is about 33% larger. The BB10 OS is much better optimized than 4.0 is so it should be insanely smooth. The system security is very good and web surfing should be faster than on any other mobile device out. Seriously, if you are open minded at all about different devices, you owe it to yourself to go look at it...

Other than that, I have no idea, lol. I hope this helps you out!

Thanks Shlunky, I will check out the X8. The Optimus doesn't really do it for me specially if its gonna be as crappily built as the previous android LG, I like to stay away from LG products.
Note II is another contender, I tried one out very nice. Xperia TL is another big one for me, but I am not convinced until I get to handle it more.
The phone is on the truck for delivery. Can't wait.
I don't do blackberry.

Very nice! I hope it works out well for you, if you don't care, post back your impressions of it.
I enjoy hearing other people's opinion on things. It helps me to have a more open and broader sense of what the device is really like.

GL!

Alright sad news.

I sold my Lumia 920 after messing with it for over a day with the camera (lightbox, different lighting, etc).
I am afraid the camera did not do it for me. Too much oversharpening, couldn't on macro quite as well as the Iphone 4s. It's rather of a weird camera to be honest. In some spots it beats the Iphone 4s hands down, in most daytime or well lit situations it is poor.

I got a Iphone 4S 32GB instead, also got $200 cash on top of that. Could have traded for an Iphone 5 but I don't like the Iphone 5's proportions.'

Goodbye Lumia 920... Your screen and audio quality will be missed (I was growing attached to the Nokia Music, it's a darn nice app even if it isn't the most up to date with some playlists).
But I need a damn camera that works... ;(

Then again... Lumia 920 is JUST $450 out of contract.. I am tempted to just buy one, and alternate between the Iphone 4s/Lumia 920. What do you guys think?

Oh man, hate to hear that. I am not sure if it was said in this thread or not, as I haven't read back through it, but Nokia has acknowledged the cameras day time shots as a short coming.
This is supposed to be fixed in a firmware upgrade. They haven't said when that will be, but I could live with "average" day time shots and great night time shots until they do (that is just me though).

The 4s is a good phone, don't get me wrong. I also don't have my Lumia 920 in hand yet as my wife and I are wiating on Black Friday/Cyber Monday deals, so I can't really tell you an honest, open minded opinion on the swap.
Is the oversharpening the only problem you seemed to have with it? How was everything else with the phone?

Edit: Almost forgot to ask, what did you think of the 8x?

Well, I broke the digitizer on my atrix 4g, and then replaced it but while I was replacing it I broke the ear speaker. I could get the 920 for $150 but compared to $100 that sucks.. maybe it's not too bad since I can't upgrade until march...

Edit: Almost forgot to ask, what did you think of the 8x?

X8 was meh, I preferred the screen on the Lumia 920. I stopped looking at it when I noticed the screen wasn't as smooth as the 920.

Yeah I know they would "fix" the camera, but the shots were below average during the day time.

Oversharpening was the only major issue for me, others include color accuracy, focusing, and a few other minor details.
I will upload a video I have of the oversharpening so you guys can see what I mean, and compared to the Iphone 4s.
The auto white balance is also not accurate and will shift during photos or video. Apparently even changing the white balance doesn't help much most of the time. Again not a big problem for me since I can just manually set it, and I usually retake 10-20 shots for most of my pictures so I can choose the best one.

Other than that the phone was the best I've used.
Buttery smooth experience opening, closing, and multitasking.

One thing that surprised me is IE10. It was finally a joy to use compared to safari, or say android's browser. Pretty snappy, rendered text flawlessly (better than the Iphone 4s/5!)
