worth overclocking 6870?

Thread Starter
Welp I've stumbled back into these forums and it has my brain filled with ideas. Is it worth overclocking my video card?

I feel like I could get more out of it, but not sure if it would even make a noticable difference.

Any opinions?

Sure!
Most 6870's will do 1000mhz (up from 900mhz stock). While a 10% clock speed increase wont necessarily translate to a 10% FPS increase, it can certainly make a game more playable, or stop shuddering, etc.

I consider it essentially a free performance upgrade. (even if in some cases, its not really noticeable.)

Jees that is quite a big difference...does it ever get too hot? I have mine OCed a little bit but nothing major, I could definitely squeeze more out of it with some good research.

I reckon there would be a guide to OCing it floating around these forums somewheres right?

It is worth overclocking. It will also increase your minimum fps in games. They get more hot when you add voltage.

Its really pretty straight forward:
I use MSI's afterburner program. Start with the core clock, up it by 10mhz increments, testing in between each increase. Once you start seen artifacts, or your game/benchmark crashes, (or simply, when your happy with your overclock) back it back down by 10-15mhz and save it as a profile (little buttons on the bottom left).
Then do the same with the memory clock. However, you wont notice as large of a performance difference from the memory. the 68xx series was never starved for memory bandwidth.)

On stock voltage, the heat increase will be very marginal. Just leave the fan on auto, and you'll be just fine.
