Computer shuts off after switching to a gtx 580

Thread Starter
My computer was running fine:
Xeon W3520 @ 4GHz
3 x 2Gb DDR 3 1600
6950 1GB (had this overclocked)
SB X-Fi
4 HDD
1 SDD
Koolance Exos 2 powered from power supply
Thermaltake Toughpower 750w ~ 4 years old

I recently switched to a GTX 580 hydro copper 2. At stock settings or mildly OC (no voltage increase) the computer runs fine no issues. This is while playing GTA IV, BF3, PS2. Now my temps are pretty good on everything GTX 580 never get above 50C i7 around 70C. When I raise the voltage on my 580 the computer will just randomly restart no BSOD not anything. Just turns off then immediately back on. It will restart more quickly into the game the higher the voltage is raised on my 580. I have a suspicion it may be my power supply but it wont restart if I loop heaven or play BF3 only seems to do it on GTA IV and PS2.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

Looks like your PSU is tripping the OCP.

Here is the rail distribution: 12V1 to the 4 pin 12V ATX (which is split from the 8 pin EPS), 12V1 & 12V2 to 8 pin EPS, 12V2 to modular PCI-e connectors, 12V3 to mobo ATX & fixed PCI-e connections, 12V4 to drives. 18 amps per 12v rail.

I currently have the fixed pci-e connector going to the 6 pin on the 580 and the modular pci-e connector going to the eight pin.

Is this the best way?

Are you only increasing voltage? Or also increasing clock frequency too? Tell us exactly what you are doing. Exactly how much voltage and exactly what clock frequency and all other useful details.

Maybe the mosfets are overheating. Just a guess.
With my reference GTX 580, my overclock is limited by voltage. 3D Mark 11 will freeze if I attempt more than 1.113V

1.113V will also freeze if my 220mm side fan is less than 100% speed.
Perhaps you could remove the water block? and check the thermal pads which I assume should be covering the mosfets? Most GTX 580's do not have a mosfet temperature sensor, but you could check in gpu-z and see if your GTX 580 has one.

You could try blowing air onto and across the backside of your GTX 580 . Open the slot above your GTX 580 to allow air to exit. See my avatar as example.

Or maybe your cpu or gpu overclock is unstable. Heaven is good for testing your power supply and testing temperatures, but does not guarantee a stable overclock in all games.

At first I was overclocking with both that is when I started noticing the issue. This happens even if I leave the clocks at stock and only increase the voltage. It is very weird because I had it stable in BF3 multiplayer for over an hour @925mhz then started up planetside 2 and it restarted within a couple minutes. Then I turn the volts/clocks down and its fine again can play for hours. My 580 is a REF model and does not have mosfet temperature sensors. I guess I could pull off the waterblock and check the pads. Although if the mosfets were overheating wouldn't It do the same thing in heaven or BF3? Plus, without temp sensors it has no idea the mosfets are overheating if the were.

Thanks for your help.

It's hard for me to give you a definite answer because I dont know what graphics settings you use in Heaven or BF3 or in any another game. Still dont know eactly how much voltage you are use and when.

There are two things which will cause mosfets (VRM's) to become hotter: more voltage and/or more current.
stock clock + more voltage = hotter mosfets
stock voltage + more current = hotter mosfets
more voltage + more current = much hotter mosfets

High graphic settings (dx10/dx11, high antialiasing, high resolution, ...) should use more current than low graphic settings.

Do a OCN or google search for "hydro copper 2 thermal pad". I see something about "Don't forget to peel off the protective film from the new thermal pads". Or maybe your hydro copper 2 is not mounted tightly enough. Be careful not to over tighten it.

Here's something to try:
Play planetside again at 925MHz but turn down the graphics settings. Maybe low or no AA. Or turn off some other graphic settings.
Assuming the problem is caused by overheating mosfets, then with reduced graphic settings, planet side 2 should run longer without mosfet overheating.

Shogun 2 in DX11 causes my GTX 580 to overheat and freeze at 930Mhz on a warm day. Fortunately for me, I don't like Shogun 2.
The PC version of Alan Wake uses high resolution textures and in 3D will freeze if my side fan is set to low speed.
Last time I ran Heaven, I noticied higher gpu temperature in DX10 than in DX11. I know that sounds strange but that's what I saw.

Another thing to try:
turn up the radiator fan speed. That should help cool the mosfets a little more.

I have tried voltages anywhere from 1.05 - 1.2 and clocks all the way up to 975 mhz. When I get home I will try as you suggested. Also, It may be a good idea to reseat the WB. Would I need to get new thermal pads?

I don't know if you need new thermal pads. Maybe make some pics and show us.
Maybe someone on the watercooling forum can answer that question better than me.
There are videos of the hydro copper 2 on youtube which might help you to know if the thermal pads are installed properly.

Looks like I may have solved it. Per your suggestion I placed a fan cooling the vrms on the back side of the card and that seemed to do the trick.
