Upgrade from 560 TI (1GB)

Thread Starter
Alright guys, Christmas is right around the corner which means it's time for my annual GPU Upgrade.

Last year I purchased this card that drove a 1080P monitor. I have since upgraded to a 2560x1440 monitor and have noticed an alarming drop in FPS because of it. I have no plans of upgrading to a multi-monitor setup, although I've been eye-balling 1600P.

Games I play: BF3, Guild Wars 2, WoW

Budget: $300

I've been following threads with comparisons between the 7950 and NVIDIA equivalents, but before I pull the trigger I wanted to see if anyone had any suggestions or comments. I feel SLI is out of the question considering the 560 is a 1GB card. Will I even notice a large difference in the upgrade? Should I wait until the GTX 7XX launch?

Thanks in advance.

I would definitely be looking at a 7950 if I were you. It's gonna be noticeably faster and the vram is really gonna be a benefit at that resolution.

I have to agree with the above. The 7950 is about 3x what the 560 Ti is. biggrin.gif Win.

If you'd rather stay Nvidia, I'd go for the GTX 660. I can be had for around $60-$70 cheaper and matches the GTX 580, which should be enough for your needs. However, the Vram allocation is lower as well, so it might just be better to stick with the 7950...

at 300 bucks get the Sapphire HD 7950 boost or Gigabyte HD 7950 OC

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125414

these cards are twice the performance of your current GTX 560 Ti card at stock. They overclock very well and can run at 1.05 - 1.1 Ghz at stock voltage and 1.15 - 1.2 Ghz with voltage tweaking. HD 7950 (1.1 Ghz) matches HD 7970 Ghz (1.05 Ghz).

Those are the two cards that I am trying to choose between. I think I'll go with the Sapphire rather than the Gigabyte per the reviews. Lots of people complaining about the Gigabyte locking up whenever the games get demanding.

I only have one concern, and maybe you guys can put it to rest. The drivers...I've been rolling through the 12.11 thread just to see problem after problem. I understand that the drivers are in beta, but this isn't anything new. When I do system builds for friends I'd love to recommend the 7950, but not if they are going to have problems related to the driver. Maybe for an advanced user I would recommend the 7950, but other people that have little to no experience I'd recommend an nVidia card.

Anyone else have problems with their existing 79xx cards related to drivers?

I've not had a problem with AMD drivers. The 7950 is the ideal card for you. One piece of advice though: make sure you get a voltage unlocked version if you want to OC.
