I believe you still have to use WINE to fold GPUs in Linux, somebody correct me if I'm wrong. I've never attempted it.

If this is true...

Sombody boo this client! {que boos from the crowd}

This is what I was expecting to find, but I haven't seen anything on GPU folding in v7 in Ubuntu. If I'm missing a link to it, will someone please point it out?

I'm folding the gpus in the v7 client in windows. I'm going to mess around with it a little more tonight. I didnt have much time when i messed with it this afternoon and probably messed something up

Are you setting the prioritys low in the windows task manager or in ubuntu in the vm? I set them low in task manager and 8 cores with low priority got 10 seconds longer tpf then 6 cores with normal priority on an 8027

update: I just got it working on 8 cores with low priority by following your video and i think its working correctly, just waiting on a few frames to see how tpf is.

update 2: Ran 10 frames on an 8027, and set-up properly via your video, 8 cores on low priority is better then it was, but still not a good as 6 cores on normal priority. I was up to 25,500ppd on 8 cores low priority, but it dropped a lot if I did anything. Now I'm back on 6 cores with normal priority and I'm up to 28,500 ppd on the 8027, so I'm just going to leave it at 6 cores, its less heat and I don't slow it down by doing anything. I just guess I have a weird rig, lol

Yeah, this is how mine works as well, but that 1% every couple of seconds should not have a very large effect on PPD.
This is interesting to me, I’ve not seen this before. What client are you using for the GPUs? Is it possible that this client is not set to “Low” priority as well? That could be causing the issue, but if both the VM and the GPU client are at “Low” priority and you have either the “advmethods” or “beta” flag on the GPU, it should not have a negative impact on the CPU.
Now if you are running the GPU client without either of these flags, then that makes sense, as the admethods / beta WUs don’t draw hardly any CPU power, but the non – advmethods / beta GPU WUs do use quite a bit of CPU resources. This has been my understanding, anyway.
Honestly, it has been so long since I have folding without having a GPU folding in my rig as well, mine could be hurting my CPU PPD and I would never know it. Frankly, though, as far as I’m concerned, so long as my GPUs keep pumping out the kind of PPD that they are right now, I could care less what they do to my CPU!
However, when I tried to cut one thread from my VM and dedicate that to my GPUs, my PPD on my CPU dropped down to about 3K PPD (not by 3K, but down to 3k), so I added all threads back to the CPU and now everything seems to be humming along as it should!
Anyway, if you find something different, please share it with us, I’m eager to see what works and what doesn’t for different CPU / GPU combinations. thumb.gif
Also, a question to the masses...
I'm just wondering, does the v7 client in Linux allow for GPU folding without much / any tweeking? I’m thinking of adding a GPU to one of my Linux rigs, but before I do, I want to find out what is involved to get it to fold. If you guys could point me toward any resources, that would be awesome! Thanks all!!!

Yeah that 1% blip here and there isnt more than me using the PC. I've paused the nV card and the SMP WU in Linux didn't change TPF at all.

I had a similar PPD increase when I allowed for the 8th thread to be used for SMP when I took the AMD card out of the 3770 machine. Its like the threads couldn't get completed in order with SMP 8 running on basically 7 threads.

No GPU folding in Linux as of yet.

That is just really odd to me! I'm not questioning you, don't think that, it just seems so weird! I've never heard of it before, but it is good to know that it could happen. Thanks for all the info!!

Np!

Yeah that does seem weird. Cause well... 8>6. I figure priority just basically means how far back in the Q user input goes and determines usability/lag. The user input CPU % should still be the same.

I thought it was wierd too. I'm gonna try it one more time before bed tonight and just leave it alone all night and see what I get in the am. If its still less ppd then 6 cores ill just leave it as 6 cores and count my system as the odd duck. Maybe it needs a few wus to stable out but i ran it 10 frames and tpf is ~5 seconds slower with 8 core low priority then 6 core normal priority. Id like to run it at 100% load for an extended period because I still havent fully tested my oc (installed chip last week). I really need to get a few high ppd 70xx to truely test its stability. Once i get more tim and reapply it ill be cranking up the overclock a little more

Smp ppd isnt all that important anyways right now. Gpu is. I've been on a hot 8057 streak the last 3 days biggrin.gif 95% 8057s and a few odd 8054s

I'm so jelly! All of my GPUs picked up 7XXX Wus last night and killed my PPD!

On top of that, I'm shutting everything but my TC rig down for the next week or so anyway because Cincinnati is going through an "Unseasonally warm period" and my basement was 80F last night when I got home (usually 70F). I refuse to turn my AC on in December, so until these 60F+ days pass, my rigs are taking a break. I speand nearly all my time at home in the basement (between my office and my theater) and I can't deal with that kind of heat.

Yeah, I hear you there, it's nearing 70F outside today in MD, which isn't normal for December, and yesterday it was down right warm in my office, I didn't check, but it had to be over 75F.

You all should live in a cooler state... like Arizona! was 50*F this morning and it is at it's warmest today at 63*F. Brrr.... To bad my pc and theater rooms were about 85*F last night. No heating or air condition necessary here. Though, something strange happened last night. It was unbelievably hot in here, the air was set to 78*F, the ceiling fan pulls down the air from the air vent. My folding pc's were cooking. I tried setting up a stationary fan on the floor up close pointing towards my intake fans and the temps kept going up and did not stop. Even the pc was buggin out with the high temps. I have no idea what happened but I took that stationary fan to straight to another zip code so my temps would go down again. And they did. Any ideas? Like I said for today outside temps are on the cooler side but no folding today. But I just want to be ready for the next time I fire them up.
