Overclock Denied

So I've been running an OC of 3.7Ghz + 2.6Ghz NB ever since I got my AMD CPU, and did a 4.0Ghz during winters. Recently around last month I was getting BSODs, too many of them. The first time I was getting too many, I formatted my C: drive, it failed and I was left thinking. So what I did was replace the HDD's SATA Cable, used only 1 RAM module, removed a GPU and installed Windows. It worked perfectly and I got everything back into order, and attached all that I had taken out. Now since the past week I was getting BSODs AGAIN. It was so weird getting a BSOD just when you leave your PC idle, so today I thought 'hey when I OC'd my NB to 2.8Ghz & it didn't work, didn't I get a similar BSOD?"
So I dialed down the NB and guess what? ALL problems solved!

But seeing the NB as the cause of this whole issue doh.gif
All BSOD codes were 50, page fault in non-paged area.

So has 'wear & tear' taken place in my CPU? I wanted to keep it around while upgrading to FX-8350, but looks like getting rid of it would be best.
My CPU is 1.5years old.

did you up the voltage? that is most likely the problem.
What voltage were you running the chip at for your OC? It is possible that the chip degraded over time.

Have you tried increasing the voltage to maintain stability?

Some X4s can't be pushed past 3.9 without some serious voltage. It's best after an overclock that you make sure you stress test the machine to make sure it's stable. BSODs only really happen if its not stable. As for the wear and tear question, i'm not 100% sure on that subject :L

No, you just pushed the NB too far. That really stresses the IMC.

Default voltages for 3.7Ghz + 2.6Ghz NB, normally is around 52c
1.5v for 4.0Ghz, but in winters stays below 45c.

Haven't touched the CPU/NB voltage, but hey it was running fine since such a long time rolleyes.gif

Well bump up the voltage a little. The max CPU/NB voltage is 1.5v on air.

"Normally around 52C" Is also pretty high for AMD chips dude!

Anyway, you have a Black edition chip, so I would just drop the NB back down and OC with the multiplier...

oh wait a sec... when your NB was at 2.6Ghz, what was the HT clock set at??? If it is running at 2.6Ghz also that may be and issue to consider!

With a default CPU of 1.4v, how much should the CPU/NB be upped?
Previously I was happy with 2.6Ghz and no volt bumps, but recently it becoming unstable has me depressed. If I have to raise the CPU/NB volts, might as well try 2.8Ghz or moar.

I thought that danger spot was around 55c? Well it was 52c when all 4 cores were stressed at 100%, which games can't do, but handbrake can, so it was less than 48c during gaming.

My HT clock is set at 2.0ghz.

OK cool just making sure you kept the HT ~2Ghz smile.gif

Yea 55 is the limit, oso you are good. I thought you meant that it was there at idle or normal usage! That would be crazy biggrin.gif

I have a 1055T that I OC'ed the crap out of for about 2 years. It definitely takes a tad more voltage now then it did back then to reamin 100% stable at the same clocks. It also seems to run a bit warmer as well... but that could be crusty waterblocks on that system rolleyes.gif
