[Kotaku] Origin Users are Suddenly Getting Hacked a Lot

Some users are reporting a wave of hacked and stolen accounts. It appears that a hacker or hackers are managing to log in to Origin accounts and then change the e-mail address and passwords associated with them, which of course locks out the original owners.

Stolen accounts are, sadly, nothing unusual in the modern online world; however, the security processes—or lack thereof—on Origin accounts are making it difficult for customers to get their accounts back. To verify accounts, EA customer service asks users to verify their dates of birth. However, the hackers are apparently changing the birthdates stored in a profile when they take over an account, thus preventing users from regaining access. Unlike other services such as Steam or Google, Origin currently has no secondary authorization process or two-step verification available.

Has anyone else from OCN been hit by this hack?

I originally posted this comment on Reddit, so I'm just going to copy it here:
On Sunday morning, I received an e-mail from EA Origin saying that my e-mail address was successfully changed. I thought it was a phishing email at first, but you can never be too sure.

I went to http://store.origin.com/ and I wasn't able to login to my current account. Alright, I should contact EA about this ASAP.

I went to https://help.ea.com/contact-us?product=origin . I need to login to my account to get customer service? I need help on retrieving my hacked account, but I need to log in to get help on it? Okay...

I log in using an account I have on Pogo.com. Live chat wasn't available, so I chose the call back option. About 10 minutes later, someone from EA calls and I tell them about the e-mail I received. He asks for my gamertag associated with the account and games that I have on it. From there, he asks for my date of birth and then tells me that it doesn't match...that's strange... they tell me that I have to contact a specialist that's only there from Monday to Friday.

On Monday, I call them, and I get to talk to the specialist. I provide my gamertag, address, full name, country, and order ID for a game that I purchased on Origin. From there, the specialist asks the question, "what is your date of birth". I supply it and she says it doesn't match. She says it is okay, since when the e-mail was changed, my full name was changed, country, gamertag and avatar was changed. They reset the account to the e-mail address that I had before and gave me a temporary password.

Overall, the hacking itself was unpleasant, and I feared that I would lose this account given the horrible stories that I've heard about EA's support, but the staff was very professional and helpful in helping me get back the account. I still don't like the way EA monetizes their games, but at least I had a good experience with their support.

hacking can happen to anything. MasterCard was used by somebody at walmart around the US a couple weeks ago. The best way to remedy the situation is proper customer support. IMO, Origin excels in this department

I just changed mine, looks like they now require 1 lower, and 1 uppercase letter along with a number.

They really need to improve their security with a secondary authorization process.

Hopefully this gets patched/fixed soon, I'm not changing my password though, last time I did that BF3 wouldn't run ("something went wrong with EA Online" error or something along those lines).
I personally could care less if I got hacked since all the games except for BF3 I have on a couple different accounts and none of those passwords are the same as any of my important stuff. But regardless, this sucks and hopefully they learn from it.

Mine's still working but thanks for the head's up, I'll definitely keep an eye out for any "You changed blah blah" emails.

Interesting how everyone loves Steam and talks smack about Origin and yet Origin's support is lightyears ahead. I had to contact them about some ME DLC key and it was really quick and painless.

well the easy solution to the issue would be to prevent the changing of your accounts email, Or at least send a confirmation to the original email account.
Its ridiculous that they allow for email address changes without actually confirming with the original email beforehand.

A 2-Step verification like steam has would be pretty useful too.
