Will we see a reemergence of game cartridges?

Thread Starter
Trends are slowly pushing cd technology to the very back of the line. There's only so much data that you can fit on a single cd and it's definitely showing in console game design. SSD technology has been getting bigger and cheaper with every passing year. That paired up with close to nonexistent load times, I think this may cause game makers to start adopting the technology in the future. What do you think?

this is a very interesting and insightful thought. Here's some issues i see....:

1. yes in coming months tlc like on the new samsung 840's will drop ssd prices a good bit maybe to the point where an oem 32 gb ssd would = $30-40
2. I see 32 gb ssd size being the best for games in the near future because developers could pack literally endless content onto the ssd, or maybe allow for space for future dlc to be put directly on the ssd and then not take up hard drive space on the console
3. as long as they are taken care of, an ssd game cartridge would last forever

issues: $30 just for the ssd eats into the other cost factors like paying developers and licenses etc. and thus would likely cement the $60 price per game that we are used to and also not allow for games to drop to super low prices once they are at the end of their lives as popular (bc now you have actual hardware sitting on a shelf not just a $1 disc

firmare updates needed to each game etc. could be an issue (kill a game ssd cartidge maybe?)

I really like this idea but feel adoption of it would not take hold as likely what we'll see is just super larger hard drives in systems and everythign moving to a digital download format for getting a game, its the way the pc game industry is headed for sure and consoles will likely follow along unless the ssd cartidge option offered some ridiculously attractive positives that I can't think of?

Probably not, downloads are the way of the future! thumb.gif

Dual layer Blu Ray disks hold 50GBs and there have already been experiments with multilayer disks. I think that we will stick with disc media for the foreseeable future, but eventually it will be DL only.

I Agree with posts above, Internet is the way of the future. Even if games would push past 100gb or even TB i don't see a use for cartridges, especcially not SSD based ones, just a waste of resources.
Maybe higher capaciy Discs can have a future but that requires higher res ad what not.

The biggest problem with a download only option is that you can't take a console game with you to a friend's house. I highly doubt that Nintendo/Sony/Microsoft will be as nice as Steam.

Agree with others. With internet speeds getting increasingly faster and cheaper it'll be the main line of distribution. Personally I rather have a physical copy of all games I buy and this would be cool but not feasible.

Realyl? The last time I had to blow into a cartridge was the NES. I don't remember the SNES, Neo Geo AES, or N64 having that issue.
