budget mobo with overclocked 8350?

post #1 of 23

I'm curious how cheep I can go on the mobo. i see the AM3+ boards going from about $50 to $220. I'm not looking to break records here, I've already got decent liquid cooling, and i don't need SLI.

You definitely want a 970 or 990 series and with as high vrm count as you can afford which you also want to be heatsinked. There is not a right or wrong answer and it really depends budget and the results that you want.

low= gigabyte 970-ud3 8+2 phase design $100
mid=gigabyte 990 fx-ud3 8+2 phase design $139

i'm just now researching this for myself also,but theses would be my picks for an x6 or better cpu.

Basically any mobo with 6+2, 8+2 or 12+2 ( Yes a 12+2 there is only 1 that has it) will work just fine.

yes but there is no such thing as a 12 phase VRM. ASRock is using a doubler on 6 phases. I did read that gigabyte's 8phase (UD3) really is 8 phase. I'm not interested in the marketing hype, I want to know what kind of overclocks people are getting. how high are people getting on the 970? the 970-ud3 sounds like a good possibility in terms of power and cost but how does it OC?

i had a 955 @ 4.2ghz on it running pretty smoothly. gigabyte is more reputable than asrock in terms of quality phases

Really.rolleyes.gif
I have a friend with an AsRock 970 Extreme 3 (4+1 phase) and he is able to hit 4.4ghz with a 6100 and he is hitting 4.3ghz with a 8150 right now. It is stable.

While, in all likelihood, the 12-phase is not working on true 12-phase, if the components of the VRM are quality then 12-phase with phase doubling will be more durable than 6-phase. It just will not improve on the voltage ripple of a 6-phase like a true 12-phase would.

But like I said, if the parts are high-quality, then the 12-phase can handle more power than a similarly built 6-phase.

I know that all of AsRock 9** series are made with quality parts.
