Finally bought a NH-d14 and it beats the heck out of my h80!!

Realizing that no one else in my house (my wife) would find it interesting that I switched my cpu cooler from an h80 to a nh-d14 I came here!

Its not the fact that I switched that makes me so pleased either, this thing has dropped my load temps by about 13~15 degrees depending on the core.

I have had the h80 running since I first built the machine (sig rig) and was always decently happy with it. Definitely can be a tad loud but new fans fix that. Most recently I was using corsairs new high static pressure series fans for the h80 radiator which I actually really liked. Bought a used nh-d14 off a friend and decided to hook it up.
I have been experimenting recently with getting my overclock stable at 4.4Ghz and with the h80 I would get much too hot at 1.31V. Switching to the dh-14 and keeping the same 4.4 @ 1.31v my temps have dropped from what would reach highs of 86C (I quickly shut down prime) to 73C max on my hottest core. ambient temp is around 20.5C

Now I can see about hitting 4.5 smile.gif

H80 is still a great cooler, especially if you hate an eyesore. (because this thing is definitely a bit of an eyesore) But If you are looking for your best bang for buck in terms of cooling performance... I'd have to go with Noctua.

edit- Oh, and this is without adding the 140mm fan back in where the h80 went.... That may help too.

Awesome to hear that. I plan on getting a SB-E soon. Go air cooling!

I have to say I was very pleasantly surprised. If you can stand how it looks, then overall I can't come up with anything else I dislike. I would say the size, but that is sorta the point smile.gif

if you got THAT much of a drop from the D14 then something was wrong with your H80 in the 1st place. the difference between a well mounted well functioning H80 and a D14 should be within a few degrees. not something in the teens.

Indeed.

Most of the top twin tower and even some single tower coolers are as good or better than CLC... and quieter with a much longer life expectancy. biggrin.gif

I know that a H80 is a few degrees behind a H100 and a NH-D14 is a few degrees behind a H100. So a H80 should be about the same has a NH-D14.

I just got a Noctua myself, and am seriously pleased with it. Must say my old case held back the noctua something chronic, and moving to a white corsair 600t got the Noctua flying. My previous case was pretty old, mind.

You know, I thought people might say something was wrong with my h80 when I got that much of a drop.

I have reinstalled it (and once a buddies for comparison) over 5 times, reapplying with 3 different brands of thermal paste (only once made a difference of a few degrees)

If I got that much of a drop in a smaller form factor case.. I would tend to agree with you that something was wrong. But logic and reason say that h80 was working fine.

I think the real reason I saw such a temp drop is how open my case is. Having a HAF X running 9 fans including the ones on the Noctua in a 20.5C ambient room seems like an excellent way to get more cooling power than one small radiator with dual fans in the case. Not hard to imagine how that would offer the potential for much more cooling power. Just my 2 cents.

I think this also sorta makes my point. The Noctua is very case dependent, and mine is optimal for noctuas design.

It's possible your ambient is lower. It just turned winter-ish around here.
