Looking for good passive OR nearly silent cooler

Title says it all. I'm looking for a cooler that can fit in this case:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811352009

It will be cooling an i3-3220. I am looking for something either completely passive or something really silent! Cheaper is better! Thanks in advance! thumb.gif

If you don't have the case yet may I suggest getting a case that will accept coolers up to 165mm. Most big coolers will perform very well passively. Thermalright Macho 120 is 150mm tall and HR-02 Macho is 160mm tall are very good passive and very quiet with stock fan.. below 800-900rpm virtually silent but is 162mm tall and 150mm tall.

I use a Phanteks PH-PC14TC on i7 980. With all fans unplugged stress testing it maxed at 70c after about 30 minutes. With fan running at 1000rpm it maxes at 50c in 3 or 4 minutes.

That looks like a nice choice by the look of it, but where can I get it? better yet, how much does it cost? I am not looking to spend more than maybe ~$30 or ~$40 on a cooler. After all, it's only cooling an i3 and will never be cooling anything else more powerful.

Assume you are referring to Macho.

Living in UK (England) makes it a little hard for me to know where you would buy one in North America. wink.gif

Google should help you find one.

Agree with Doyll, thermalright heatsink on HR-02 Macho and Macho 120 on its silent. But they have a new True Spirit 120M which is smallest 120 mm fan base tower cooler.
Please go...

Well, I'm using the 212+ push pull on I5 3550.
The processor temps maxes at 50C - 53C on Prime95 with the fans spinning around 750rpm - 850rpm.

But I believe that is better for me don't try the Prime95 without at least one fan. LOL

212+ is159mm tall. So Macho 120 at 150mm for sure and probably HR-02 too at 160mm.

IBT barely brings fans off of idle... CPU is 80-99% ish and load graph is a jagged line but system never gets hot. Maybe I'm doing something wrong.

One Handbrake doesn't do much, with 2 Handbrakes it does, and 3 Handbrakes and I get a straight line load and cores are between 46-50c with max showing up to 52c. Fan rpm varies from 1000-1150rpm.

When I used i7 920 one Handbrake gave me 67-70c max spikes and fans ran at 1300rpm

That one looks pretty good, but the damn thing is $11 bucks to ship so it's already $40 at that place. Perhaps there is something better for the price? I found the Macho 120 you guys speak of but it's $50 and I don't think that is worth it just to cool a simple i3. I'm already buying something from Newegg but they don't have the True Spirit on there. frown.gif

The question is not if you think it's worth it or not. There simply are not a whole lot of options, if it needs to be nearly silent, small, cheap and from newegg.
Obviously it largely depends on your definition of "nearly silent" though. Personally i'd say a high quality 120mm fan below 700-800rpm is nearly silent. Do you plan on using any case fans?
This thing might be a good option, it's only 151mm tall and the fan can run as low as 500rpm via pwm. Personaly i would use a Enermax TB Silence on it though.

The GPU fan could be also louder than any fan at low rpm.
