How to run a proper FAN comparison?

Asking about performance of following fans apples to apples performance, and value:
Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme Rev. A AMD only $26.95
Zerotherm ZT-10D $36.99
ZALMAN CNPS9900 MAX 135mm $43.99
Logisys Assassion for $62.11
H50 ~$41[ Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

Original post asking about H50 vs 212+ Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
I have a Hyper 212+ right now and the possibility to get a H50 for $35 or less (good deal, right? if its not, ill just forget it, but from what I get, $50 is the standard price on these).

And, I could happen to use ~5*C cooling, it would really make a difference since I'm right at that limit (already have a ****ton of fans in my case, etc etc, dont need to talk about adding an extra fan or reseating the heatsink or anything like that).

But I can't find any good information on Hyper 212+ vs Corsair H50. People talk about the fans, but the stock fans with these kind of things always suck anyways and get replaced, and I have 2 x Yate Loon Mediums that I'm going to be using.

So I'm basically asking, with 2 identical fans in push/pull, what is the difference between the Hyper 212+ and Corsair H50.

Everywhere I've searched, and every review I've found, talks about the ****ty stock fans, or how loud the stock fans (as if you can't lower the speed of the stock fans, a 'loud' stock fan that is lowered to 80% and is still higher CFM than the other fan, is a better fan, not a worse one).

I know many people out there won't exactly know the answer to this question, but perhaps to anyone who's used both in the same configuration (ie both with same pushing fan, or with same 2x fans, or maybe knows of a review that was more objective).

I'm aware that extra fans can change the equation due to increased cost, but come on. Anyone using a tower hsf or closed loop is going to have 2 x custom fans for push pull anyways. Or at least, I do.

Noise and aesthetics both are non-issues to me. I think tower coolers and closed loop water coolers both look very cool, and you can always control fan speeds, and performance>>>sound anyways.

I'm only asking about the H50 because that's the only one at a steal of a price for me right now (i think, $35 or less for it is a steal right?) - I don't mind discussion about better performing or more importantly, better valued, closed loop water cooling, but understand that 'y u go h50 just get h70' isn't helpful at all

Editing/updating thread:

Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme Rev. A AMD only $26.95
Zerotherm ZT-10D $36.99
ZALMAN CNPS9900 MAX 135mm $43.99
Logisys Assassion for $62.11
H50 ~$41

Are my choices. Which would be the best buy? I dont care about noise (heatsinks make zero noise, it's the fans that make the noise), I'm not worried about water leakage or motherboard strain or motherboard space, I find all 4 of these coolers to look extremely badass so aesthetics is not an issue nor a reason I'd buy one over the other, and I'm most interested in Apples to Apples performance, ie Push/Pull with 2 identical (yate loon-m) fans, - which of the listed fans are the best in performance, and best in value

Obviously I know an H50 is a terrible value for $60, but I'm able to get one for $35, and the other coolers with the prices listed. So what would be the best buy with the prices listed? I can't get any other coolers for better prices or anything, so nothing like "Well get the megahalems!", because I cant get the megahalems for super cheap.

Also the Logisys might be a little bit out of my budget, so if you are going to say the Assassin at $62 is the best value of the 4, please tell me which one you think is the 2nd best value. It seems like it's unanimous that the Assassin is the best cooler of the 4, but I'm pretty sure all 4 would meet my needs, and be a significant step up from my CM 212+ push/pull YL-M.

2nd question, in regards to "How to run a proper benchmark comparison (of TIM and heatsinks): Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

Renewing thread

So I bought a used Noctua NH-D14 ($43 after shipping, no mounting) and used H50 ($27, non-stock fan) off ebay. I'm also getting PK1, PK2, and PK3 samples from Prolimatech.

I also have a Hyper 212+. As for fans, i have:
Many authentic Yate Loon Mediums
NZXT Case Fan
CM Blademaster (stock 212 fan)
Noctua stock fans
'Manhattan 120mm fan' (coming with h50, dont know much about it)

I'm planning to do a grand old benchmark comparison thread, comparing Thermal pastes, and Heatsinks. So as a continuation of what's been going on, I just wanted to pass on you guys how to properly do this. This is my plan:

Using my sig system (Phenom x4, biostar a770e3), I got 2x yate loon intake, rear top nzxt case fan, rear cm blademaster, and given hsf fans, probably very negative case pressure, and lots of ventilation (also a 40mm vrm fan and 80mm chipset fan, and gpu fans). I will overclock to something like 3.9ghz, 1.5vcore, so it pushes my hyper 212 to something like 58-60*C blend.

I'll run IBT Standard memory OR small FFT p95 (blend passes are all different so cause different cpu temps, i need a consistent stress test, ibt seems to heat up the most though by much more than p95).

Prolimatech said to use heatsink paste, spread on cpu and heatsink, but i think that would cause too random results. I think a small rice drop on the hsf would be better, even with HDT pipes. Not sure what to do here, I do want to follow Prolimatech's suggestions and do what's best, but I also want a very clear review. I suppose maybe a spread that's different every time would be covered by margin of error of a degree or two though.

For the thermal paste tests, I'll use the H50 (HDT of 212 too random, nh-d14 will probably cool too strongly to make thermal paste noticeable). And run p95 for 2-12 hours for setting the thermal paste. Maybe depending on paste or something.

Probably use push/pull of yateloons on the h50, and instead of do the whole intake vs outtake, I'm just going to put the H50 completely outside my computer case

For HSF tests, to get a real apples to apples test, I'll use the same thermal paste each time, and run 2xyate loon push pull (intake on h50), including on the noctua nh-d14. I'll also do a test of stock noctua fans (i think push/pressure stock with pull yate loon medium would just cause temps to rise more than fall compared to stock).

Anyways I think it's all pretty straightforward, but just to get feedback from people. It's frustrating every benchmark review out there uses stock fans, which is just totally worthless test results to me. So hopefully this should give real, useful comparisons of... the hyper 212 vs h50 vs nh-d14, in case anyone is confused of which of these three to buy haha. should be useful though, its 3 heatsinks at varying performance levels, people can use it to maybe compare hyper evo vs h50, kind of thing. Only problem is Im not using an Intel chip, i think that would cause great temp differences since those are running 70-90*C on load overclocked.

So I've edited this thread a few times, due to evolving concerns. Please read the last page/post for the discussion, since things have changed. The question is now about How to run a proper fan benchmark/comparison

So Prolimatech really liked my review, that they linked it on facebook!

https://www.facebook.com/pages/Prolimatech-Co-LTD/143936609425

They've offered to let me review their magnetic pins (which I think i can do), and their ultra sleek 140mm fan.

Unfortunately, I think reviewing a fan requires some expensive equipment, that I don't have - dbA tester, and CFM tester.

I have the following fans, too:
NF-P12
NF-P14 (my only 140mm fan), these are the stock PWM fans that come with nh-d14 se2011 (same as nh-d14 regular but with pwm control)
yate Loon medium 120mm
NZXT stock case fan (fn-120rb i think its called)

I could do something like compare cooling results of the nf-p14 vs ultr alseek on my nh-d14 using only a 140mm fan (i'd just cable tie it, id cable tie both, if compatibility is an issue with the wire fan mounts and all).

I could also use my ear and compare the sound profiles of the nf-p14 vs ultra sleek.

but basically itd be a very subjective and non-scientific review.

what do you guys think? I'd love to check out the hardware but I dont want to post a bad review (in terms of quality) or a useless review. I mean... i dont know. if i saw a review of a fan, i would consider it. if i saw someone make a post saying 'yea i used x and y fans, x was the better one', i'd consider it. if someone made a review saying 'we dont have the tools to really gauge it, this is all by ear, and we only compared it to 1 other fan'.... yea... frown.gif

I mean how much would such tools cost? What tools am I even looking for here?

I think it would be really dissapointing, if Prolimatech lets me borrow their Ultra sleek new 140mm fan, and then I review it unfavorably based on faulty or total lack of equipment. Like that would not be fair at all.

I don't know the exact difference, but it should be better.
My H50 was right on par with my Megahalems Rev B in terms of performance w/ 2x exact fans in p/p on both setups.

Anecdotes are interesting to investigate but I doubt a H50 would fare better than an H70 when you and a bunch of other people run a whole suite of tests.

h50 > h70 guru3d forums

Not anecdotes, tests.

Every review site says the h70 is better, because they are idiots. The h70 comes with TWO stronger fans than the h50. I mean i'm not going to say that stock cooling would be better if you are using the right fans because that's a bit of an exaggeration, but performance benchmarks with dissimilar fans doesn't mean ****.

Now I know this is budget cooling so $5-10 for a fan can change what's worth buying or not, but the best comparison should be just using 2 equal fans, since people are going to do buy 2x fans that are better anyways. no one uses the stock fans for long. (hyper 212 fan is loud as ******* ****, although it is strong as hell).

anyways i have clue why the h50 is better, but there could be a million reasons. They both use different pumps, the h70's pumps are less than half the size of the h50, and while they are supposed to be as good or better, that may not be true. The radiator fins on the h70 are tighter, so maybe when comparing the h50 vs h70 with less-than-2-super-strong-high-CFM-fans, the h50 is better, and for the h70 to be better you need 2 x super high speed fans. i dont know. The h70's tubes are also significantly longer than the h50, that could contribute to water pressure.

I don't really know, and I don't care. I can't get the H70 for under $40. I can get the H50 for at least $35, and maybe $20, which is why I'm asking if it's worth it for $35 and does it, straight up, perform better than the hyper 212 (which seems to be sellable for $20, so im asking is it worth the $15 upgrade to h50, basically).

Well I'm not sure what the heck was going on with those tests, but the H70 should (key word) perform better w/ the thicker rad.
Either way though, the H50 should be an improvement for you over the 212+ (and yea at $35 that is definitely a nice bump for the price).

The older models are all getting prices slashed now that Corsair has revised their whole lineup for 2013.

h50 > h70 guru3d forums

212+ to an H50 is not an upgrade. More of a sidegrade. Why throw $40 at something else which will give you 2-3C at most?

Save for a better cooler please.

I'm not a silence freak at all.

What would be a better cooler? Even something like a noctua d-n14 or megas aren't dramatically better than the 212+ and twice the cost. It looks like the h50 with push/pull vs hyper 212+ push/pull is like 10*C difference? For $40 that seems like quite a big upgrade.

I mean I dont really see anything else that would be a dramatic upgrade for under $60.

And the noctua isnt quieter than the hyper 212+, the fans are. It's aggravating when cooling systems are rated on the piece of **** or overrated fans they are bundled with. They just put high quality fans with a ****ty heatsink and its touted as a great heatsink (the H70, for example), or it's a great system with **** fans to reduce the price. The noctua isnt going to be quieter than my hyper 212 if I put **** fans on it, and it isnt going to be better if I put high quality fans on my hyper 212. What would be more appropriate, is comparing the two with the same push/pull fans on them.

At stock settings the h50 might give you some better cooling. It's when you start bumping voltage and overclocking that the h50 would probably beat out the 212. I switched my 212 for a H100 and it' was a great decision. Less room taken up in my computer and it cools better.

H50 is undoubtedly better. if you see benchmarks youd see it would not do so well because of the stock fans. when you throw in another fan in there for push/pull the performance will improve dramatically. I remember overclocking my Phenom II x6 1090T @ 4.1ghz 3GHZ NB ont hat cooler. it still ran really nice and cool
