Drive dead?

I have this drive here from my friend's pc, which I was repairing. I managed to back up all his data. The problem is when I removed all the virus's and spyware from his hdd, some system files were removed due to infection. So I figured I would just reinstall the os(winxp home), but the installation files won't seem to copy. When I tried to make partitions using Partition Magic the program says the disk is unreadable. Same thing happens when I try to boot to it, when installing the os. But during the install of the os, it sees the drive for partitioning. Do you guys think the drive might be dead? I tried a chkdsk /p in the recovery console and it claims there's no problems. I also tried a fixboot and fixmbr which didn't seem to help either.

The thing is, my buddy is using an hp computer he bought which only has a 250w power supply and he added an Asus n6600 which requires a minimum of 300w psu. My theory is his pc isn't getting enough power and the drive is dying.

Any ideas from you guys is greatly appreciated. thanks in advance.

Try using a program to write zeros to the drive. Then install the OS.
