I have a Phenom x6 1045t currently clocked at 2.9ghz and a Gigabyte GA-M68MT S2P motherboard with a 4+1 power phase.

I'm aiming for atleast 3.5ghz but will motherboard be ale to handle it?

4+1 will be able to handle 3.5ghz at reasonable volts.

I have the exact same CPU and Motherboard (mines Rev 3.0) and I can't even get a stable clock over the stock 2.7!

Anytime I try and set a FSB clock in BIOS even from just 200 to 210 I get: Warning! Now system is in safe mode. Please re-setting CPU frequency in CMOS setup.

95% of the time I'll restart and my monitor won't pick up any video signal.

I have adjusted the NB Frequency, HT Link and Memory Multiplier accordingly and my temperatures are fine.

My anthlon II x2 245 did better I guess because it's 65w not 95w

What's your method to getting a stable clock with that CPU and Motherboard, Roadkill?

The MB would be the deciding factor. It may not like to overclock the FSB well.

What specifications of a motherboard do you look at to ensure OC stability? HT Link / NB Freq? Phase power? (This board has HT of 1000MHz and NH Freq of 2000MHz, But I've been setting the NB Freq to 1000)

The northbridge should be either 1.8GHz or 2GHz stock speed. Lowering your chip to 1GHz will be a HUGE bottleneck for performance.
HTT speed of 1GHz will only be a problem for performance, not stability. The stock HTT speed is also 1.8GHz if I remember right. This board just sucks ass and has a terrible chipset. Thats why it doesnt like overclocking, is hard to get stable, and runs at slow speeds. The nForce 6xx series is a rebrand of the nForce 5xx series, which is a minor update and rebrand of the nForce 4xx series. So basically the reason you have an HTT speed of only 1GHz is because it is a chipset from back in the socket 939 days when those processors only ran at 1GHz HTT. Nvidia hasnt actually made a chipset in many years, and the last few years they made chipsets it was mostly just rebrands of older generations. Nvidia left the chipset business because they sucked so bad and had massive problems since Nvidia was using silicon they already knew to be defective. It was a big lawsuit and Nvidia just left the game after that.

The board doesnt even properly support stock DDR3 speeds for your processor. Max officially supported by this board is DDR3-800, and an overclock to DDR3-1066 is technically supported by certain modules. This goes back to the chipset never being designed for this processor and why it cant even support stock speeds for different areas of the CPU. Honestly, I had never even seen DDR3-800 before today. I thought 1066 was the slowest DDR3 ever sold.

The good news is that those chipsets are technically capable of closer to 300MHz fsb speed, from the 200MHz stock. However I dont know if the bios is bug free enough to run much higher than the stock speed with the more modern processors than the chipset was ever designed to be used with.

I know it seems like I am bashing the MB you guys have, and I kinda am. But the board is just designed terribly. It sucks that you are stuck with it and I wish it would work out better for you both :/

No worries honestly I really hate this mobo too, I got it because I needed to replace my OEM mobo which didnt have a PCI-E slot and this board popped up on newegg for 60 bucks and it was mini-atx so it was a logical choice at the time.

But thats unfortunate that its crap for OCing.

Right now I'm running my ram at 1600MHz, Bios had it at 1333 and the website says max is 1333(O.C.) whatever that means. but I set it to 1600 because thats my RAMs max clock and it seems to run okay.

So what should I look for in a board so I know it will be reliable?

alright, I tried setting the FSB to 225 but i automatically go into safe mode, just like you said.

I did however, manage to overclock it to 2.99ghz, it seems the mobo wont let me go past the 3 GHZ mark. frown.gif

It is indeed terrible. If I were to upgrade, what would be the best mobo price/performance wise?
