eVGA 7600 GT overclock - Page 2

post #11 of 18
Yes, on the logic... The pencil mod increases voltage to the core and to the memory by reducing the resistance at the spots that are being shaded. This is a really easy mod to do, and if anything goes wrong you can simply wipe off the graphite and start over.

You move the clocks up a little and then run the entire 3dmark 05 and 06 tests to completion. Also run the artifact test on ATItool. If you can go 10 minutes artifact free and run the 3dmark tests without freezing, artifacting, or any troubles you should be stable.

Thanks for the info guys.

Some people are telling me on various gaming forums that I won't see that much improement by way of FPS. I haven't looked at too many benchmarks but from the ones that I have seen, it seems that the graphic performance of a lot of OC'ed cards is a huge improvement by way of output from the card...like 50%...

Regardless, I think I am going to do it.

ATI tools can be used with any card? Doesn't have to be ATI?

Yes.. I am using ATItool to OC my Nvidia XFX7600GT.

My 3dmark scores went up about 1200 points with my OC.

There may not be huge difference in frame rates, but I have noticed a big difference in the speed at which games run.

You may get 3-5FPS with a nice OC. More likely to get around 1-3FPS though.

It's easy to do, so you mind as well.

I use ATITool to OC. There is a "Find Max Core" and a "Find Max Memory" clock feature, but it freezes my computer for clocking it too high. OC 10Mhz, scan for artifacts for at least 15 minutes (shouldn't have to do more than 30 minutes) and go on from that. Once you get artifacts, downclock by 2Mhz until they're gone. Then back off 2Mhz off that to be on the safe side. Do this for the memory and core speed. Don't do it at the same time.

So, 570/700 - say 618 is your max core -
580, test, 590, test, 600, test, 610, test, 620, test, artifacts. -2 Mhz, no artifacts, back off 2 more.

Reason why I say don't do both at the same time is because I can run my memory at 810, but I can't run my core at full speed doing that. (635/790 or 610/810 - the first of which gives me better performance.)

Need any help just hit me up with an IM or PM.

There are bunches of different techniques people use, and its up to use to which you like. Some people say you should back off 5Mhz once you find the max, some say do 5Mhz jumps, some say scan for at least an hour, etc. Up to you.

I got coolbits2 and found the maximum.
It listed my max at 598 / 794.
3dmark06 = 3491

I got ATItools and jacked up the clock speeds to 600/405(810).
3dmark06 = 3532

So, my original stock score was 3368. OC'd score 3532.

Is that below average? Should I be able to squeeze more from a software mod?

What is an artifact any way? The artifact tester in ATItools runs for about 10 mins, the core temp hops to around 75 and the BSOD (nvid. something rather)
...that's never good. Does that mean overclocked too far? I assume so since it's heating up too much...

Thoughts comments. Out of my league.

BSOD =/= good.

BSOD = unstable. My 7600GT BSODed a few times trying to reset the max core and accidently putting "5600" instead of "560."

Take it back some.

i figured out the artifacthing... just blurries and imperfections. Here is the latest...

I made some headway last night...

7600 GT stock - 578/750
7600 GT OC - 601/810

4400+ x2 CPU stock - 2.1mhz
4400+ x2 CPU OC - 2.4 mhz

Orignial 3Dmark06 = 3368
Overclocked 3Dmark06 = 3573

5.7% score wise.

Anything above those settings and things went unstable and temps on cpu core went up like mad.

One problem I had was when I adjusted the core frequency on the CPU to ranges of 225, the core speed dropped to 2.0. I assume this is from a lack of voltage? I wimped out and didn't adjust voltage. As soon as I went down to 220, core speed jumped to 2.4 and change.

Considering when I ran OCCT, my temps went straight to mid 50s and I shut of the test. I figure adding more volts will just add to the temperature...

So, what do you make of the OC stats? Seem about right so a decent oc on both the GPU and CPU or have I not tapped a good majority of whats available.

Still newb to the whole OC thing so the more I can learn the better. I used your tutorial at the top Mul. That's a great piece. Worked out well. The only thing I couldn't find in the list was the max voltage for the Toledo - I assume 1.6v on the safe side. My current V was 1.37.

Alright, back to work.
