VRM question: PWM vs Linear Regulator

Thread Starter
I noticed that some motherboards use a PWM for the VDIMM VRM, while others use a linear regulator. Is there a major disadvantage either way? It seems like the latter option would be the cheaper one, but I wonder if it would lead to any issue for the end user or overclocker

Thanks for the advice!

In general, linear regulators are less efficient than switching (PWM) regulators, here is a good read

Thanks for the link!

So it's quite a bit less efficient, I wonder how much power is being wasted on 1.50v dimms...
