In the market for an SSD. Opinions please?

Hey guys,

So as you can see from the title I'm in the market for an SSD. I have to say my knowledge of SSDs aren't the greatest so I'm looking for some opinions. I have around £160 ($253.76) but prepared to go a little higher if it's worth it. It also has to be around 250GB as I'll be using it as my main hard drive with my old hard drive being second drive.

Here are some I've been looking at:

Corsair 240GB Neutron
http://www.scan.co.uk/products/240gb-corsair-neutron-series-25-lamd-ssd-sync-nand-read-555mb-s-write-370mb-s-90000-iops-max

Sandisk Extreme 240GB SSD
http://www.scan.co.uk/products/240gb-sandisk-extreme-25-ssd-sata-iii-6gb-s-read-550mb-s-write-520mb-s-83000-iops-max

OCZ Technology 256GB Vertex 4 SSD
http://www.scan.co.uk/products/256gb-ocz-vertex-4-25-ssd-sata-6gb-s-indilinx-everest-2-mlc-flash-read-560mb-s-write-510mb-s-120k-io

Samsung 256GB 830
http://www.scan.co.uk/products/256gb-samsung-830-series-slim-7mm-ssd-basic-kit-sata-iii-read-520mb-s-write-400mb-s

Samsung 250GB SSD 840
http://www.scan.co.uk/products/250gb-samsung-840-series-basic-25-ssd-3-core-mdx-21nm-toggle-nand-read-540mb-s-write-250mb-s-96k-iop

I have some questions also:
  • How long do SSDs last? I've heard they only have so many write cycles.
  • Is it worth purchasing it now or are the prices about to drop?
  • How future proof are SSDs?

Any help is appreciated,

I would choose between last 3. None of those are bad picks. If you wind up getting the Sandisk, make absolutely sure the firmware is updated to R211 though.

Samsung 840 pro would have been better but its quite expensive on that site. I would say any between last 2.

SSD's are quite reliable now a days.

I've always had good products from Cosair and am using one of their older SSD's (F60) and had no issues.

You say you're using it as your main drive, do you mean saving games, music, films, programs etc to it or are you using it as a boot and program drive?

If you're using it for everything, you may run out of space very quickly if you're installing games to it!

Should be alright for space currently only using 200GB and that's without being overly bothered about space. I stream all my music and delete videos after I watch them.

It doesn't have to be in this list. It can be others you think are good within the price range.

Just another option I've been looking into. What about 2 Intel 180GB 330 Series SSD's in raid? Would this be a better option?

If you are looking for faster boot time from a SSD then 1 SSD is faster to boot than a Raid 0 SSD.
